Season Review
Seattle Seahawks 2015
Entering the 2015 season, Pete Carroll’s Seattle Seahawks were dealing with the ultimate Super Bowl hangover after the devastating goal-line interception that cost them back-to-back rings. Desperate to reclaim their throne, general manager John Schneider pulled off a blockbuster offseason trade, sending center Max Unger and a first-round draft pick to the New Orleans Saints for elite tight end Jimmy Graham. Despite high expectations, a combination of contract holdouts and chemistry issues led to a sluggish 2-4 start. However, the resilient squad found their rhythm down the stretch to secure a 10-6 record, finishing second in the NFC West and clinching their fourth consecutive playoff appearance under Carroll.
The narrative surrounding Seattle’s offense started to shift as they transitioned from a run-heavy juggernaut into trusting Russell Wilson with the ball more often, although the focus of this iteration of the team was still run-first. Seattle ranked fourth in both total yards with 6,058 and scoring with 423 points (26.4 ppg). Russell Wilson put together a fantastic campaign, throwing for 4,024 yards and 34 touchdowns with just eight interceptions, while leading the NFL with a 110.1 passer rating. When Marshawn Lynch was sidelined for nine games due to injury, undrafted rookie Thomas Rawls stepped up brilliantly to rush for 830 yards. Wideout Doug Baldwin enjoyed a massive breakout, catching 78 passes for 1,069 yards and a league-leading 14 touchdowns, while rookie return specialist Tyler Lockett added dynamic versatility to the passing game by racking up 664 yards of his own.
Seattle’s defense remained the gold standard of the league, marking the fourth consecutive year they led the NFL in scoring defense by allowing only 277 points (17.3 ppg). Under new defensive coordinator Kris Richard, the Legion of Boom continued to terrify opposing quarterbacks, ranking second in passing defense and second in total yards allowed. Defensive end Michael Bennett led the pass rush with 10.0 sacks, while linebackers Bobby Wagner and K.J Wright anchored the middle with 230 combined tackles. In the secondary, safety Earl Thomas grabbed five interceptions, while cornerback Richard Sherman and a returning Kam Chancellor shutdown opposing aerial attacks with their physical, aggressive style.
The turning point of Seattle’s season came after a brutal Week 10 home loss to the Arizona Cardinals that dropped them to 4-5. Sitting on the playoff bubble, the Seahawks ignited a furious five-game winning streak. The run was highlighted by a thrilling 39-30 shootout victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers at CenturyLink Field and a dominant 38-7 road blowout against the Minnesota Vikings. During this five-game stretch, Wilson became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for three or more touchdowns without an interception in five consecutive games, completely transforming the team’s offensive identity.
In the postseason, Seattle survived a frigid Wild Card matchup in Minnesota, advancing with a 10-9 victory after Vikings kicker Blair Walsh missed a potential game-winning short field goal. Their season ended in the Divisional Round with a 31-24 loss to the top-seeded Carolina Panthers, despite a furious second-half comeback. The legacy of the 2015 Seahawks remains significant, as the team proved they could evolve from a ground-and-pound squad into a more balanced offensive unit. Lockett earned first-team All-Pro honors as a returner, while Wilson’s late-season tear cemented his status as an elite franchise quarterback.
