Season Review
Seattle Seahawks 2014
Heavy is the head that wears the crown, and no team felt that pressure entering the 2014 campaign quite like Pete Carroll’s Seattle Seahawks. Coming off a historic demolition of Peyton Manning’s Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII, Seattle returned to the field with a massive bullseye on their chest. General manager John Schneider kept the core intact while bringing in veteran defensive tackle Kevin Williams in free agency to bolster the interior rotation. Despite starting the season in a sluggish 3-3 rut, Pete Carroll’s squad eventually clicked into gear, matching their championship swagger with a scorching finish. Seattle surged to a 12-4 regular season record, securing the competitive NFC West crown and grabbing the conference’s top playoff seed for the second consecutive year.
While the defense grabbed the headlines, Seattle’s offense was a highly efficient, ground-and-pound machine that wore opponents down to the bone. The unit ranked 10th in points scored with 394 (24.6 ppg) and ninth in total yards with 6,012, fueled by the league’s most dominant rushing attack. Operating behind rookie right tackle Justin Britt, Marshawn Lynch was the personification of physical football, rumbling for 1,306 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground while adding four receiving scores. Quarterback Russell Wilson was the ultimate dual-threat weapon, throwing for 3,475 yards and 20 touchdowns against just seven interceptions. Wilson also tortured defenses with his legs, rushing for a staggering 849 yards and six touchdowns on his own. Top targets Doug Baldwin and Jermaine Kearse kept the passing chains moving, combining for 1,362 receiving yards in a play-action-heavy attack.
The real story of this team, however, was the legendary Legion of Boom defense. Under coordinator Dan Quinn, Seattle’s defensive unit achieved absolute dominance, ranking first in the NFL in points allowed with 254 (15.9 ppg), total yards allowed, and passing yards allowed. Cornerback Richard Sherman shut down entire sides of the field with four interceptions, while free safety Earl Thomas and strong safety Kam Chancellor delivered devastating hits that set the physical tone weekly. Inside the box, middle linebacker Bobby Wagner anchored the defense with 104 combined tackles despite missing five games to injury. Up front, Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril terrorized quarterbacks, combining for 12.0 of the team’s 36.0 sacks. It was a suffocating group that simply refused to let opposing offenses breathe.
Seattle’s campaign was a dramatic tale of two halves. After opening the year with a statement 36-16 victory over Green Bay, the Seahawks stumbled into a midseason crisis, losing tough road battles to San Diego and St. Louis. Sitting at a mediocre 6-4 after a tough road loss to Kansas City in Week 11, the champions reached a crucial turning point. Rather than folding, Seattle sparked a spectacular six-game winning streak to close out the year. This stretch was highlighted by a defensive masterclass against division rival Arizona, where the Seahawks held the Cardinals to just three points in Week 12 and six points in Week 16 to solidify their grasp on the division. During this six game stretch the Seahawks defense conceded an incredibly low 6.5 point per game.
The postseason run was nothing short of cinematic. After handling Carolina, Seattle pulled off one of the greatest playoff comebacks in NFL history against Green Bay in the NFC Championship Game, rallying from a 16-0 halftime deficit to win 28-22 in overtime. The ride came to a heartbreaking end in Super Bowl XLIX, where a late goal-line interception sealed a 28-24 defeat to the New England Patriots. One yard separated the Seahawks from back-to-back Super Bowls. The decision not to run the ball remains one of the most debated calls in NFL history. Despite the gut-wrenching finale, the legacy of the 2014 Seahawks remains.
