Season Review
Baltimore Ravens 2015
The 2015 Baltimore Ravens season was a bizarre, snake-bitten campaign that broke a proud franchise's decade-long identity. Coming off a divisional round appearance, John Harbaugh's squad entered the year with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations, but instead stumbled to a 5-11 record and a third-place finish in the brutal AFC North. The front office attempted to patch holes by signing safety Kendrick Lewis, cornerback Kyle Arrington, and veteran quarterback Matt Schaub, while drafting future impact pieces like Za'Darius Smith and Darren Waller. Yet no amount of depth could survive the catastrophic wave of injuries that soon defined their year, leaving the Ravens to endure their first losing season since 2007.
Offensively, the unit became a total triage ward, plunging to 25th in the league in points scored with 328 (20.5 ppg). Franchise quarterback Joe Flacco started the first 10 games, grinding out 2,791 yards and 14 touchdowns against 12 interceptions before a torn ACL ended his season. With Flacco out, Marc Trestman's pass-heavy offense - which actually led the NFL in passing attempts with 676 - dissolved into a carousel featuring Schaub, Jimmy Clausen, and Ryan Mallett. Before fracturing his arm, running back Justin Forsett led the ground game with 641 yards, giving way to rookie Javorius Allen, who contributed 514 yards. Legendary receiver Steve Smith Sr. was on a historic pace with 670 yards in just seven games before a torn Achilles ended his year, leaving Kamar Aiken to step up as the top target with 944 receiving yards.
The Ravens' defense finished a respectable 8th in total yards allowed but dropped to 24th in points allowed by surrendering 401 points (25.1 ppg). Dean Pees' unit missed the edge-rushing presence of Terrell Suggs, who tore his Achilles in Week 1, forcing rookie Za'Darius Smith to step up and log 5.5 sacks. Middle linebacker C.J. Mosley was a bright spot, racking up 117 tackles and a fumble recovery for a touchdown, alongside veteran Daryl Smith's team-high 121 tackles. Elvis Dumervil added 6.0 sacks on the edge, and nose tackle Brandon Williams anchored the interior run defense. However, the secondary struggled mightily with takeaways, generating a league-worst 6 interceptions all year, despite 3 picks from cornerback Jimmy Smith.
Every week was seemingly a nailbiter, as 14 of Baltimore's 16 games were decided by one possession. The season opened with three straight agonizing losses to Denver, Oakland, and Cincinnati, setting a dark tone. They found brief relief in Week 4 with a 23-20 overtime win against the rival Pittsburgh Steelers, but immediately followed it with an overtime loss to Cleveland and close defeats to San Francisco and Arizona. The defining moment of the chaos happened in Week 12 against the Browns on Monday Night Football, when Brent Urban blocked a potential game-winning field goal and Will Hill returned it 64 yards for a walk-off touchdown to push the team to a 4-7 record. After that emotional peak, a three-game collapse against Miami, Seattle, and Kansas City officially eliminated them from contention.
Missing the playoffs for only the second time in the Harbaugh era, the 2015 Ravens left behind a legacy misfortune rather than incompetence. They became the first team in NFL history to have their first 12 games decided by one score, proving they were competitive despite having an NFL-record number of players on Injured Reserve. The rare silver lining belonged to special teams, where punter Sam Koch earned a Pro Bowl nod with a 46.7-yard average. Kicker Justin Tucker remained elite, hitting 33 of 40 field goals, including four from beyond 50 yards. This brutal season ultimately served as a reset button, yielding the high draft pick necessary to rebuild the roster for the next era of Baltimore football.
