Season Review
Baltimore Ravens 2014
The 2014 Baltimore Ravens campaign arrived with a distinct sense of urgency under head coach John Harbaugh. Coming off a disappointing 8-8 season in 2013 that snapped a five-year streak of playoff appearances, the Ravens restocked the cupboards by hiring Gary Kubiak as offensive coordinator and signing veteran wide receiver Steve Smith Sr., tight end Owen Daniels, and defensive back Darian Stewart. The strategic retooling yielded a 10-6 regular season record, good for third place in a super-competitive AFC North. Despite battling roster attrition, Baltimore secured the sixth seed in the conference, proving once again that a Harbaugh-led team remains a dangerous postseason opponent when December rolls into January.
Gary Kubiak completely revitalized the Ravens offense by implementing a highly effective west coast zone-blocking scheme. Baltimore finished the year ranked 8th in the league in scoring offense with 409 total points (25.6 ppg) and 12th in total yards. Quarterback Joe Flacco thrived under this new system, engineering a highly efficient regular season where he threw for 3,986 yards and a career-high 27 touchdowns against just 12 interceptions. The breakout story of the year belonged to journeyman running back Justin Forsett, a free-agent addition who gashed defenses for 1,266 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns on a spectacular 5.4 yards per carry. Flacco paired this newly dominant ground attack with the ageless, fiery Steve Smith Sr., who hauled in 79 receptions for 1,065 yards and 6 scores, giving the offense a much-needed physical edge.
On the other side of the ball, Baltimore leaned on its historical identity to finish 6th in points allowed (18.9 ppg) and 8th in yards allowed. The front seven remained a destructive force, paced by outside linebacker Terrell Suggs and his 12.0 sacks, alongside a rejuvenated Elvis Dumervil who wreaked havoc with a team-high 17.0 sacks. Rookie inside linebacker C.J. Mosley, selected in the first round of the draft, instantly became the heartbeat of the defense, pacing the unit with 133 combined tackles, 3.0 sacks, and 2 interceptions. Defensive tackle Haloti Ngata anchored the interior trenches to help secure a top-five rushing defense that limited opponents to just 3.6 yards per carry, masking a vulnerable secondary that frequently relied on patchwork solutions due to injuries to cornerback Jimmy Smith.
Baltimore navigated a season defined by wild momentum swings and division dogfights. After dropping the opener to Cincinnati, the Ravens rattled off a crucial 26-6 Thursday night win over the rival Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2. A dominant opening stretch, highlighted by a 48-17 blowout of Tampa Bay where Flacco threw five first-half touchdowns, pushed the team to 5-2. However, consecutive division losses to the Bengals and Steelers in Weeks 8 and 9 threatened to derail their playoff aspirations. The team steadied the ship down the stretch, securing pivotal wins over Miami and Jacksonville, though a frustrating Week 16 slip-up against the Houston Texans forced the Ravens to lean on a Week 17 fourth-quarter rally against the Browns to clinch their postseason berth.
The postseason run cemented the 2014 team legacy as a premier January spoiler. In the Wild Card round, Baltimore marched into Heinz Field and handed the Steelers a decisive 30-17 defeat, marking the franchise’s first-ever playoff win in Pittsburgh. The Divisional Round match against the top-seeded New England Patriots became an instant classic, with Flacco throwing four touchdowns and building two separate 14-point leads before a severely depleted secondary succumbed to Tom Brady in a heartbreaking 35-31 loss. Individual accolades reflected the roster’s talent, as C.J. Mosley earned Pro Bowl honors and finished second in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting, while Justin Forsett earned a Pro Bowl nod for his career year. This team remains celebrated as one of the most balanced, explosive offenses of the Flacco era.
