Season Review
Baltimore Ravens 2000
The 2000 Baltimore Ravens entered the season under head coach Brian Billick with a reconstructed roster hungry for a physical identity. Baltimore executed a brilliant offseason by signing key veterans like tight end Shannon Sharpe, defensive tackle Sam Adams, and quarterback Trent Dilfer, while drafting powerhouse running back Jamal Lewis. The result was a grueling 12-4 regular season record, which landed them second in a brutal AFC Central division behind the Tennessee Titans. This team was built for January, translating their wildcard status into a dominant postseason run that culminated in a blowout victory over the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXXV.
Offensively, the Ravens excelled at risk mitigation and ground-and-pound brutality. Ranking 14th in points scored (20.8 ppg) and 16th in total yards, the unit leaned heavily on a rushing attack that finished fifth in the NFL. Rookie Jamal Lewis was the clear engine, bruising his way to 1,364 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Passing duties were split between Tony Banks and Trent Dilfer, who threw for 1,578 and 1,502 yards respectively, combining for 20 touchdowns against 19 interceptions. Dilfer eventually secured the starting job, utilizing veteran tight end Shannon Sharpe, who led the team with 67 receptions for 810 yards.
The true story of this team was a historically terrifying defense that ranked first in points allowed and second in total yards. Defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis unleashed a buzzsaw that set a league record by allowing just 165 points (10.3 ppg) while forcing a league-high 49 turnovers. Middle linebacker Ray Lewis anchored the unit with 137 combined tackles, capturing the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award. Up front, Sam Adams and Tony Siragusa suffocated opposing ground games, while opposing ground games were limited to a measly 2.7 yards on the ground. Safety Rod Woodson and cornerbacks Duane Starks and Chris McAlister turned the secondary into a total no-fly zone.
The regular season was a bizarre roller coaster defined by an historic offensive drought in October. The Ravens endured a five-game stretch where they failed to score a single offensive touchdown, losing three straight games to Miami, Washington, and Tennessee but still managing to win two of those games against Cleveland and Jacksonville. Instead of fracturing, the team galvanized around their defense. The turning point arrived in Week 10 against the Cincinnati Bengals, when Billick fully committed to Dilfer at quarterback, sparking a relentless seven-game winning streak to close the regular season, including a defensive shutouts of the Dallas Cowboys.
In the postseason, the Ravens shifted from terrifying to completely legendary. They steamrolled through the AFC, dismantling Denver 21-3, conquering the Titans in Tennessee 24-10, and shutting down Oakland 16-3 before destroying the New York Giants 34-7 in the Super Bowl. Ray Lewis took home Super Bowl MVP honors, cementing his status as the premier defensive icon of his generation. This group secured their legacy as arguably the greatest defensive unit ever assembled, forever altering how front offices valued defensive dominance over offensive fireworks.
