Season Review
Los Angeles Rams 2022
The 2022 Los Angeles Rams season proved to be the ultimate championship hangover, transforming from a star-studded Super Bowl defense into a historic casualty of the NFL injury gods. Entering the year with Lombardi expectations under head coach Sean McVay, the Rams doubled down on their top-heavy roster model by signing veteran linebacker Bobby Wagner and wideout Allen Robinson. Instead of another title run, L.A. stumbled to a dismal 5-12 record, finishing third in the NFC West. A relentless wave of offensive line fractures and devastating injuries to foundational superstars quickly tanked the season, officially cementing the team as the holder of the worst record by a defending Super Bowl champion in NFL history.
Offensively, the Rams completely lost their identity, bottoming out as the league’s 32nd-ranked unit in total yards and 27th in points scored with 307 (18.1 ppg). Matthew Stafford struggled through nine games, throwing for 2,087 yards with 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions while getting sacked 29 times before a spinal cord contusion ended his season. Triple Crown winner Cooper Kupp remained elite, hauling in 75 passes for 812 yards and six scores, but a high-ankle sprain in Week 10 shelved him permanently. Lacking any explosive rhythm, the passing game dissolved into an aerial patchwork featuring John Wolford, Bryce Perkins, and a late-season Baker Mayfield cameo, while a stagnant rushing attack relied heavily on Cam Akers, who scraped together 786 yards and seven scores behind a rotating door of blockers.
While the offense cratered, the defense tried desperately to keep the team afloat, finishing 19th in yards allowed and 21st in points allowed (22.6 ppg). Legendary defensive tackle Aaron Donald fought through double teams for five sacks in 11 games before a high-ankle sprain cut his campaign short. In Donald’s absence, Bobby Wagner proved he still had elite football left in him, racking up a team-high 140 tackles and six sacks to earn second-team All-Pro honors. In the secondary, cornerback Jalen Ramsey delivered another Pro Bowl season with four interceptions and 18 passes defended, anchoring a unit that remained fiercely competitive despite being constantly short-changed by their offensive counterparts.
In hindsight, the season’s trajectory was clear from the opening kickoff, starting with an embarrassing 31-10 blowout loss at home against the Buffalo Bills. The true turning point arrived during a brutal six-game losing streak spanning October and November, highlighted by a demoralizing divisional sweep at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers and a 27-23 loss against the Seattle Seahawks. The lone bright spot in an otherwise gloomy winter was a dramatic Week 14 Thursday Night Football victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, where Baker Mayfield, just two days after being claimed off waivers, engineered a stunning 98-yard game-winning drive to pull off a 17-16 miracle.
The 2022 Rams left behind a complicated legacy that served as a cautionary tale about the volatility of the NFL. It showcased the steep price of the team’s aggressive ‘f^^k them picks’ roster construction strategy, where an absence of mid-round depth left them completely exposed once the injury bug bit. The season is remembered as the stark comedown from their Super Bowl LVI peak, proving that even the most innovative schemes can’t survive a total roster collapse.
