Season Review
St. Louis Rams 2003
The 2003 St. Louis Rams entered the season facing a critical existential crossroads under head coach Mike Martz. Following a highly disappointing 7-9 campaign in 2002 that exposed fractures in their championship core, expectations were quietly tense as the franchise officially handed the keys of the offense to a new pilot. The biggest headline of the offseason was the official changing of the guard under center, alongside a major trade that brought in fiery offensive tackle Kyle Turley to bolster the front line. The roster was also infused with youthful athleticism through the draft, bringing in impact linebackers Pisa Tinoisamoa and Scott Shanle, along with speedy wide receiver Kevin Curtis. Martz masterfully steered this transitioning squad to a superb 12-4 regular season record, capturing the NFC West division title and reclaiming their status as an elite conference powerhouse with a perfect 8-0 home record at the Edward Jones Dome.
Operating the complex Air Coryell passing system, the Rams offense hummed at a premier level to rank second in the league in points scored with 447 (27.9 ppg) and ninth in total yards with 5,457. The units efficiency was sustained by 26-year-old quarterback Marc Bulger, who earned a Pro Bowl selection by throwing for 3,845 yards and 22 touchdowns, effectively closing the chapter on the legendary Kurt Warner era. Bulger leaned heavily on a historic season from wideout Torry Holt, who absolutely torched opposing secondaries to lead the NFL with an astonishing 117 receptions and 1,696 receiving yards, while complementing veteran target Isaac Bruce who chipped in 981 yards. While injuries limited future Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk to 11 games, he remained incredibly potent when healthy, racking up 818 rushing yards and finding the end zone 10 times on the ground to give the pass-heavy attack vital balance.
Defensively, coordinator Lovie Smith sculpted a highly opportunistic unit that finished the year ranked 17th in points allowed (20.5 ppg) and 16th in yards surrendered. While they gave up chunks of yardage, this defense specialized in pure, unadulterated chaos, leading the entire NFL by forcing a staggering 46 total takeaways. The pass rush was anchored by defensive end Leonard Little, who generated a ferocious 12.5 sacks and forced 6 fumbles to earn first-team All-Pro honors. In the secondary, veteran safety Aeneas Williams provided indispensable leadership and elite ball skills by grabbing four interceptions and recovering four fumbles. The back end was further solidified by ball-hawking cornerbacks Jerametrius Butler and Travis Fisher, who recorded four interceptions apiece, alongside physical safety Adam Archuleta who tallied 5.0 sacks and 79 combined tackles.
The regular season schedule featured a series of dramatic momentum swings and signature victories that defined their playoff march. After dropping a frustrating season opener on the road against the New York Giants, the Rams ignited their home crowd in Week 2 with a thrilling 27-24 overtime win against the rival San Francisco 49ers. The true turning point arrived in mid-November, launching a spectacular seven-game winning streak that included another overtime win, this time against the Cardinals, and a relentless 48-17 dismantling of the Minnesota Vikings in late November. Despite a minor late-season speed bump in the regular season finale against the Detroit Lions, St. Louis entered the postseason as the number two seed in the conference, radiating an aura of dome-field invincibility.
However, the season was shattered in the postseason during a legendary, heartbreaking NFC Divisional playoff battle against the Carolina Panthers. In what became the definitive final curtain call for the Greatest Show on Turf era, the Rams battled back from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit, fueled by a late Marshall Faulk touchdown and a successful Jeff Wilkins onside kick recovery that set up a game-tying field goal as time expired. The exhausting marathon finally concluded in double overtime when Carolina struck on a sudden 69-yard touchdown pass, sealing a 29-23 defeat. Despite the devastating exit, the 2003 Rams left a lasting footprint, highlighted by Pro Bowl accolades for Bulger, Holt, Little, Williams, Wilkins, and tackle Orlando Pace, proving they could still fly as high as any team in football.
