Season Review
Los Angeles Rams 2020
The 2020 Los Angeles Rams entered the year facing plenty of skepticism, carrying a modest Vegas over/under win total of 8.5 after missing the playoffs the previous year. Head coach Sean McVay shook up his staff by letting go of veteran defensive coordinator Wade Phillips and replacing him with a relatively unknown outside linebackers coach named Brandon Staley. This choice redefined the team's identity, pivoting them from a high-flying offensive machine into a gritty, defensive-first juggernaut. Navigating a brutal NFC West, the Rams ground out a 10-6 regular season record to secure second place in the division and lock up a wild-card berth. While the year lacked the aesthetic brilliance of their 2018 Super Bowl run, it proved that McVay could win ugly in the brand-new SoFi Stadium. They ultimately validated their postseason spot by advancing to the divisional round, proving they belonged among the conference elite.
Offensively, the Rams operated a balanced, play-action heavy West Coast system that finished 11th in total yards but struggled to finish drives, ranking a disappointing 22nd in points scored with 372 (23.3 ppg). Quarterback Jared Goff completed 67.0 percent of his passes for 3,952 yards and 20 touchdowns, but his 13 interceptions and seven fumbles highlighted a growing capsizing of his chemistry with McVay. Goff relied heavily on his elite tandem of wideouts, as Cooper Kupp caught 92 passes for 974 yards and Robert Woods added 90 receptions for 936 yards while contributing another 155 yards on the ground. Without a single workhorse running back, Los Angeles leaned on a committee approach featuring rookie Cam Akers, who logged 625 rushing yards, and Darrell Henderson, who added 624. Tight end Tyler Higbee provided a reliable safety valve with five touchdowns, but the offense lacked the vertical explosiveness of prior years.
The true soul of this team belonged to Staley's defense, which finished the regular season ranked first in both points allowed (18.5 ppg) and total yards allowed. Opponents managed a meager 296 points all season against a unit that suffocated passing games, ranking first in passing yards and passing touchdowns permitted. At the center of everything was defensive tackle Aaron Donald, who terrorized offensive lines to the tune of 13.5 sacks and 28 quarterback hits. Free-agent addition Leonard Floyd resurrected his career on the edge by racking up 10.5 sacks, while cornerback Jalen Ramsey completely erased top wide receivers on a weekly basis. The secondary thrived on depth, as safety John Johnson led the team with 105 tackles, and defensive backs Darious Williams and Troy Hill combined for seven interceptions. Hill became a scoring threat himself, turning those takeaways into two defensive touchdowns to fuel the league's stingiest group.
The regular season was defined by massive swings of momentum. It opened with a statement 20-17 victory over the Dallas Cowboys to christen SoFi Stadium and featured an impressive mid-season stretch, including a physical 23-16 victory over the rival Seattle Seahawks. However, consistency remained elusive, epitomized by a mind-boggling Week 15 collapse against the winless New York Jets that cost Los Angeles a shot at the division title. Following a frustrating 20-9 loss to Seattle the next week where Goff suffered a broken thumb, the season teetered on the brink of disaster. Facing a must-win finale against the Arizona Cardinals, backup quarterback John Wolford stepped into the spotlight and guided the team to an 18-7 victory. It was a gritty, high-stakes performance that perfectly mirrored the resilient, defensive-led nature of the team's campaign.
In the playoffs, the Rams exacted revenge on the Seahawks with a 30-20 wild-card triumph in Seattle, fueled by Akers's 131 rushing yards and a brilliant pick-six by Williams. The journey ended the following week in a 32-18 divisional loss to the top-seeded Green Bay Packers at a freezing Lambeau Field. Despite the early exit, the 2020 campaign left a legacy, highlighted by Aaron Donald capturing his third NFL Defensive Player of the Year award. This season marked the end of an era in Los Angeles. The limitations of the offense convinced management that they had maxed out Goff's potential under center. After the season concluded, the front office engineered a blockbuster trade for Matthew Stafford, using the blueprint of this elite 2020 defense to set up their championship run the very next year.
