Coming off a miserable, low-scoring loss in Super Bowl LIII, the 2019 Los Angeles Rams spent the entire year trying to recapture their offensive mojo, ultimately falling victim to the brutal realities of the NFC West. Sean McVay’s team entered the season burdened by massive expectations and a rapidly closing championship window. Offseason additions like veteran safety Eric Weddle were meant to solidify the roster, while rookie draft picks Taylor Rapp and David Edwards were thrown straight into the fire to provide depth. Instead, the Rams stumbled to a 9-7 record, finishing a distant third in a top-heavy division and missed the postseason. It was a sobering reminder of just how fast life changes in the NFL.

The offensive identity that once took the league by storm completely evaporated, forcing Jared Goff into a volume-heavy, highly inefficient role. Goff threw the ball an astonishing 626 times, racking up 4,638 yards but tossing 16 interceptions against just 22 touchdowns. Cooper Kupp and Robert Wood formed a dynamic pass catching duo securing 184 catches for 2,295 yards and 12 touchdowns between them to spearhead a unit that frequently forgot how to run the football.

Defensively, Wade Phillips’ unit fought through an identity crisis of its own, finishing 13th in yards allowed and 17th in scoring defense by surrendering 364 points (22.8 ppg). Everything, as always, revolved around Aaron Donald, who remained an unblockable alien with 12.5 sacks and a ridiculous 20 tackles for loss. Linebacker Cory Littleton did solid job in the middle with a team-high 134 tackles, and Dante Fowler stepped up with 11.5 sacks. Yet, the real story was the secondary’s total facelift. Les Snead flipped the script midseason, shipping out Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib to acquire superstar cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who immediately brought an alpha presence to the defense alongside the hard-hitting rookie Rapp.

The season was full of erratic performances, defined by a devastating three-game autumn slide that ultimately buried their playoff hopes. After a promising 3-0 start, the team fell off in Week 4 during a comical 55-40 shootout loss to Tampa Bay, followed by a heartbreaking one-point Thursday night defeat in Seattle. The turning point came in late November when Lamar Jackson and the Ravens absolutely pulverized the Rams 45-6 on Monday Night Football, exposing a total lack of physicality. While L.A. showed late-season signs of life by blowing out Seattle 28-12 in their return game, a costly 34-31 loss to the 49ers in Week 16 officially eliminated them from contention, turning their Week 17 win over Arizona into a meaningless exhibition.

Missing the playoffs just one year after a Super Bowl appearance cemented this team as cautionary tale about roster sustainability and the curse of the championship hangover. Despite the team's collective step backward, individual brilliance still shone through, highlighted by Cooper Kupp finishing fifth in AP Comeback Player of the Year voting and Aaron Donald earning Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro honors while finishing fifth in Defensive Player of the Year voting. This transition year closed out the Coliseum era in Los Angeles, forcing McVay and Snead to fundamentally rethink their philosophy before opening up their new palace at SoFi Stadium.
