Season Review
St. Louis Rams 2001
The 2001 St. Louis Rams entered the season with immense expectations to recapture the magic of their recent championship run, and under head coach Mike Martz, they looked like an absolute juggernaut. St. Louis dominated the league with a stellar 14-2 regular season record, comfortably securing first place in the NFC West division. The offseason infusion of talent, including key defensive additions like linebacker Mark Fields and safety Kim Herring, along with a draft haul featuring Damione Lewis and Adam Archuleta, transformed the roster into an elite complementary unit. They steamrolled through the NFC, locking up the top seed with an aura of invincibility that made a Super Bowl parade feel like a foregone conclusion.
This offense was another iteration of the 'Greatest Show on Turf', lighting up scoreboard graphics weekly to finish first in the league in points with 503 (31.4 ppg) and total yards with 6,690. Kurt Warner operated at a masterclass level, unleashing an aerial assault to throw for 4,830 yards and 36 touchdowns, despite tossing 22 interceptions. Marshall Faulk was the ultimate chess piece, racking up 1,382 rushing yards and an astounding 21 total touchdowns from scrimmage. When Warner dropped back, he had the luxury of targeting a premier receiving duo in Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce, who gained 1,363 and 1,106 receiving yards respectively, leaving opposing defensive coordinators completely helpless.
While the offense grabbed all the national headlines, Lovie Smith's defensive unit quietly mutated into a championship-caliber group, ranking third in total yards allowed and seventh in points allowed (17.1 ppg). The secondary was reinforced by veteran cornerback Aeneas Williams, who grabbed four interceptions and returned two for scores, perfectly locking down the boundary alongside Dexter McCleon. Up front, pass rusher Leonard Little enjoyed a breakout campaign by generating a monstrous 14.5 sacks, while defensive end Grant Wistrom added 9.0 sacks to a ferocious pass rush. Supported by elite middle linebacker London Fletcher, who racked up 119 combined tackles, this unit specialized in turning opponents over, creating 34 total takeaways.
St. Louis set the tone immediately by squeezing past the Philadelphia Eagles 20-17 in an overtime thriller during Week 1, triggering a six-game winning streak. Their unblemished record finally cracked in Week 7 against the New Orleans Saints in a wild 34-31 shootout defined by an uncharacteristic eight turnovers. Rather than collapsing, Martz's squad responded with another relentless six-game surge to end the season, highlighted by a revenge 34-21 road victory over those same Saints in Week 14. They closed the regular season by trouncing the Indianapolis Colts and Atlanta Falcons, outscoring their final two opponents 73-30 to carry roaring momentum into the postseason.
The postseason began with pure dominance as the Rams dismantled the Green Bay Packers 45-17 and edged out the Eagles 29-24 to capture the NFC crown. However, their legacy was permanently altered in Super Bowl XXXVI, where they suffered a shocking 20-17 upset at the hands of the Patriots on a last-second field goal. Despite the heartbreaking finish, the regular season accolades cemented this team's greatness, highlighted by Warner capturing his second NFL MVP award and Faulk taking home Offensive Player of the Year honors. They remain one of the most explosive, aesthetically dazzling football teams ever assembled, even if they ended up on the wrong side of a dynasty's birth.
