Season Review
Los Angeles Rams 2018
The 2018 Los Angeles Rams entered the campaign with a singular mission: go 'ALL-IN' and push all the chips into the middle of the table. Following Sean McVay’s stunning 2017 arrival, general manager Les Snead treated the offseason like an NBA-style talent grab, acquiring high-profile veterans Marcus Peters, Aqib Talib, Brandin Cooks, and Ndamukong Suh to supercharge a young roster. The aggressive gamble paid immediate dividends. The Rams tore through the regular season with a 13-3 record, easily capturing back-to-back NFC West division titles and securing the conference’s second seed. While the year culminated in a trip to Atlanta for Super Bowl LIII, the journey itself established the franchise as the most exhilarating, star-studded show in professional football.
McVay’s offensive architecture reached its zenith during the regular season, finishing second in the NFL with 527 points (32.9 ppg) and 6,738 total yards. Quarterback Jared Goff orchestrated the attack with supreme efficiency, throwing for 4,688 yards and 32 touchdowns while earning Pro Bowl honors. The engine of the offense remained running back Todd Gurley, who lead the backfield with 1,251 rushing yards and a staggering 17 touchdowns on the ground, adding 4 receiving scores before late-season knee inflammation slowed his momentum. When wideout Cooper Kupp tore his ACL mid-season after catching 6 touchdowns, Robert Woods and Brandin Cooks seamlessly shouldered the load, each clearing the 1,200-yard receiving mark to give Goff a pair of lethal, deep-threat weapons.
Defensively, coordinator Wade Phillips deployed a streaky, opportunistic unit that finished 20th in points allowed (24.0 ppg) but thrived on chaos, ranking third in the league with 30 takeaways. Everything centered around defensive tackle Aaron Donald, who authored one of the most destructive individual seasons in NFL history by racking up a league-leading 20.5 sacks and 25 tackles for loss from the interior. Suh added 4.5 sacks as a stabilizing presence along the defensive line, while linebacker Cory Littleton anchored the middle with a team-high 125 tackles and 3 interceptions. Despite occasional vulnerabilities against the run and a secondary hindered by Talib’s mid-season ankle injury, the defense consistently came up with timely, game-altering stops when the high-flying offense required a possession.
A historical turning point materialized in Week 11 during an unforgettable Monday Night Football showdown against the Kansas City Chiefs at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. In a game that felt like a glimpse into the future of football, the Rams outlasted Kansas City 54-51, surviving five lead changes in the fourth quarter of the highest-scoring matchup in Monday Night history. Samson Ebukam returned both a fumble and an interception for touchdowns, crystallizing the defense's knack for big plays. The team started the year on a blistering 8-0 streak, and despite a cold December stretch that featured a 15-6 reality check against the Chicago Bears, they stabilized with consecutive division wins over Arizona and San Francisco to carry momentum into January.
The postseason showcased the full duality of the McVay era. L.A. ran over Dallas 30-22 in the Divisional Round behind a 123-yard rushing performance from late-season pickup C.J. Anderson with another 115 yards by Gurley, then survived a hostile Mercedes-Benz Superdome in a controversial 26-23 overtime win over the New Orleans Saints to capture the NFC Championship. However, the magic ran out in Super Bowl LIII, where Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots neutralized McVay’s concepts in a grinding 13-3 defeat. Though the finale was a bitter disappointment, the season’s legacy is defined by its individual hardware, as Aaron Donald secured his second consecutive AP Defensive Player of the Year award, cementing this specific Rams squad as an offensive juggernaut that redefined modern league trends.
