Season Review
St. Louis Rams 2004
The 2004 St. Louis Rams season marked the definitive twilight of the Great Show on Turf era, presenting a volatile campaign that frequently teetered on the edge of disaster. Led by head coach Mike Martz, the Rams stumbled to an 8-8 regular season record, securing a second-place finish in the NFC West. Entering the year with expectations of maintaining their high-flying offensive supremacy, St. Louis instead encountered an identity crisis, heavily exacerbated by defensive liabilities and a staggeringly high turnover rate. Despite these glaring inconsistencies, the Rams managed to sneak into the postseason as a wild card team, providing one final gasp of relevance for a franchise rapidly transitioning away from its historical peak.
St. Louis built its identity entirely on a pass-heavy offensive assault, ranking a stellar sixth in total yards while relying on the arms of Marc Bulger and veteran backup Chris Chandler. Bulger functioned as the offensive engine across his 14 starts, throwing for 3,964 yards and 21 touchdowns against 14 interceptions. The aerial attack remained elite as wideouts Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce both surpassed the 1,000-yard threshold, with Holt earning a Pro Bowl nod on the back of 94 receptions for 1,372 yards and 10 touchdowns. On the ground, the legendary Marshall Faulk gained 774 yards as the primary option, while dynamic rookie running back Steven Jackson flashed future star potential by averaging 5.0 yards per carry. However, the offense was severely capped by 39 turnovers, ranking 29th in the league and drastically undermining their yardage efficiency.
While the offense could still move the football, the St. Louis defense acted as a sieve for most of the campaign, ranking a dismal 25th in points allowed by surrendering 392 points (24.5 ppg) over the course of the regular season. The secondary was particularly vulnerable, anchored by cornerback Jerametrius Butler, who picked off five passes, and safety Adam Archuleta, who registered 89 combined tackles. Up front, defensive end Bryce Fisher provided a legitimate pass rush spark by compiling a team-high 8.5 sacks, while Leonard Little added 7.0 sacks from the opposite side. Unfortunately, the unit lacked consistency and struggled immensely against the run, ranking 29th in rushing yards allowed and failing to generate timely takeaways, finishing near the bottom of the league with a microscopic 15 forced turnovers.
St. Louis navigated a schedule defined by dramatic swings in momentum, highlighted by a thrilling 33-27 overtime victory against the division rival Seattle Seahawks in Week 5. That victory came as part of a three-game winning streak that pushed the team to a promising 4-2 start. However, the midseason schematic integrity collapsed during brutal back to back games in the winter featuring blowout losses to the Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers. Needing a late resurgence to save their season, the Rams rallied behind crucial victories over the Philadelphia Eagles and a dramatic 32-29 overtime triumph against the New York Jets in the season finale to split their final record down the middle.
The Rams secured a unique place in NFL history by becoming the first team ever to qualify for the postseason with a point differential as poor as minus -73. They maximized their opportunity in the Wild Card round, traveling to Seattle and shocking the Seahawks in a 27-20 victory to secure a season sweep of their division rivals. The ride ended abruptly the following week in the Divisional round during a definitive 47-17 thrashing by the Atlanta Falcons. The legacy of this 2004 St. Louis squad remains a fascinating case study of an era concluding in real time, serving as the final playoff appearance for a core group that had captivated the football world for half a decade.
