Season Review
Philadelphia Eagles 2025
Entering the 2025 season as the defending Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles faced the brutal challenge of trying to repeat under the bright lights of Lincoln Financial Field with a target firmly on their backs. Head coach Nick Sirianni returned for his fifth year, promoting Kevin Patullo to offensive coordinator after Kellen Moore departed. While the Birds successfully reloaded to secure an 11-6 record and became the first NFC East team to repeat as division champions since 2004, the season ultimately felt like a bit of a missed opportunity. Despite the strong record and high expectations, a lack of second-half execution left the team vulnerable. The journey ended abruptly in a tight 23-19 heartbreak against the San Francisco 49ers in the Wild Card round, shattering Philadelphia’s hopes of hoisting back-to-back Lombardi trophies.
Offensively, the Eagles leaned heavily on a controlled run-first West Coast scheme that finished 19th in points scored (22.3 ppg) and 24th in total yards. Jalen Hurts orchestrated the unit with veteran poise, earning a Pro Bowl nod while throwing for 3,224 yards, 25 touchdowns, and only 6 interceptions. He also chipped in 421 yards and 8 scores on the ground. Saquon Barkley provided the thunder in the backfield, rushing for 1,140 yards and 7 touchdowns while catching 2 scoring passes. On the perimeter, DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown both surpassed the 1,000-yard milestone, racking up 1,008 and 1,003 yards respectively. Tight end Dallas Goedert served as a lethal red-zone threat, grabbing 11 touchdowns to round out a potent collection of skill players.
The real identity of this team, however, belonged to Vic Fangio’s defense, which stifled opponents to finish 5th in points allowed (19.1 ppg). Philadelphia featured a punishing 3-4 front headlined by defensive tackles Jordan Davis and Pro Bowler Jalen Carter. The pass rush generated consistency, with Jalyx Hunt leading the roster with 6.5 sacks and Moro Ojomo adding 6.0 of his own. Zack Baun anchored the linebacking corps with a team-high 123 tackles. In the secondary, young cornerbacks Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell both put together sensational All-Pro campaigns. Mitchell’s tight coverage and DeJean’s 16 pass deflections transformed the secondary into a lockdown unit that ranked 8th in passing yards allowed.
The season unfolded with dramatic streaks, starting with a dominant 8-2 run that included wins over rivals like the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs. However, a mid-season regression struck in late November, leading to a frustrating three-game skid against Dallas, Chicago, and the Los Angeles Chargers. The Chargers loss was an overtime gut-punch where the offense turned the ball over five times. The Birds eventually stabilized in mid-December. They bounced back with a 31-0 shutout against the Las Vegas Raiders and locked up the NFC East title with a 29-18 win over Washington, providing some momentum before the regular-season finale.
That momentum vanished in the postseason when the Eagles fell at home to the 49ers in the Wild Card round. Despite a first-half lead and an interception by Quinyon Mitchell, the offense collapsed in the second half, failing to score a touchdown and turning the ball over on downs on their final drive. In terms of legacy, the 2025 squad will be remembered as a defensive powerhouse that couldn’t fully maximize its offensive firepower. Though individual accolades were plentiful - including six Pro Bowl selections and All-Pro honors for DeJean and Mitchell - the inability to repeat as champions leaves this season etched in Philadelphia as a painful story of what could have been.
