Season Review
Philadelphia Eagles 2004
Entering the 2004 season, the Philadelphia Eagles carried immense pressure after collapsing in three consecutive NFC Championship games. Head coach Andy Reid triggered a blockbuster offseason spending spree to fundamentally reshape the franchise, signing premium perimeter threat Terrell Owens and elite edge-rusher Jevon Kearse, while bringing back linebacker Jeremiah Trotter. These investments yielded immediate regular-season dividends as the Eagles tore through the league to finish with an exceptional 13-3 record, easily claiming the top spot in the NFC East. Philadelphia looked completely unstoppable for most of the year, securing home-field advantage in the playoffs so early that Reid comfortably rested his key starters during the final two weeks of December, cementing their status as the class of the conference.
The offensive unit transformed into an absolute juggernaut under Reid, finishing the regular season ranked eighth in points scored with 386 (24.1 ppg). Donovan McNabb enjoyed the finest statistical campaign of his career, completing 64 percent of his passes for 3,875 yards, 31 touchdowns, and a microscopic 8 interceptions, culminating in a stellar 104.7 passer rating. His symbiotic relationship with Owens revolutionized the passing game, as the legendary wideout generated 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns across just 14 games. Meanwhile, running back Brian Westbrook served as the ultimate dual-threat weapon out of the backfield, punishing opposing defenses to the tune of 812 rushing yards and an additional 703 receiving yards to keep the chains moving all season.
Defensive coordinator Jim Johnson deployed his trademark blitz-heavy scheme with ruthless efficiency, molding a unit that finished second in the NFL by surrendering only 260 points (16.3 ppg). Kearse proved worth every penny by spearheading the pass rush with a team-leading 7.5 sacks, while Trotter added necessary muscle to the interior after reclaiming his starting role. The true crown jewel of this defense, however, was an elite secondary that suffocated opposing quarterbacks. Cornerback Lito Sheppard earned first-team All-Pro honors by snatching 5 interceptions and returning two for touchdowns, including a dramatic 101-yard score against Dallas. Anchoring the backend was safety Brian Dawkins, whose legendary intensity and 4 interceptions provided the emotional heartbeat for the entire roster.
Philadelphia ignited the city by winning their first seven games, highlighted by an explosive 30-13 victory over Detroit. A jarring blowout loss to Pittsburgh served as a brief wakeup call, but the team responded by winning six straight contests, including a 49-21 thrashing of Dallas. Disaster struck in Week 15 when Owens suffered a fractured fibula, but the Eagles still dismantled Minnesota and Atlanta in the playoffs to finally shatter their conference championship curse. In Super Bowl XXXIX, a hobbled Owens miraculously returned to catch 9 passes for 122 yards, but three costly McNabb interceptions doomed the Eagles in a painful 24-21 defeat to New England, leaving a legacy of a brilliant team that fell just agonizingly short.
