Season Review
Philadelphia Eagles 2024
The 2024 Philadelphia Eagles regular season was a masterclass in aggressive roster reconstruction that immediately paid massive dividends, pushing the team to a dominant 14-3 record and the NFC East crown. Following a disappointing finish to the previous year, general manager Howie Roseman and head coach Nick Sirianni completely overhauled both sides of the ball, introducing Kellen Moore as offensive coordinator and veteran mastermind Vic Fangio to run the defense. The most impactful splash came in free agency, as the Birds signed premier running back Saquon Barkley away from their division rivals, along with pass rusher Bryce Huff and defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson. Additionally, the franchise infused high-end youth into the secondary by drafting cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean. The calculated gamble yielded a powerhouse that marched through the conference and ultimately culminated in a spectacular Super Bowl LIX victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.
Kellen Moore implemented a brilliant high-octane offensive ground assault that ranked seventh in the NFL in points scored with 463 (27.2 ppg) and eighth in total yards (6,242). Quarterback Jalen Hurts anchored the unit with supreme efficiency, completing 68.7% of his passes for 2,903 yards, 18 touchdowns, and just five interceptions in 15 starts, all while adding 14 rushing touchdowns on the ground. However, the defining engine of this offense was Saquon Barkley, who delivered a legendary season with 345 carries for 2,005 yards and 13 touchdowns, earning first-team All-Pro honors. When Hurts looked to the air, second-team All-Pro receiver A.J. Brown commanded defenses with 1,079 receiving yards, while DeVonta Smith proved to be a lethal secondary weapon, snagging eight touchdowns of his own. Tight end Dallas Goedert provided a consistent security blanket across the middle as the offensive front dictated the tempo of nearly every game.
Defensively, Vic Fangio engineered an absolute juggernaut that stifled opponents on a weekly basis, finishing the regular season ranked first in total yards allowed and second in scoring defense conceding 17.8 points per contest. The secondary underwent a complete renaissance, spearheaded by rookie standout Quinyon Mitchell and the versatile Cooper DeJean, who quickly established themselves as shutdown defenders in the slot and on the perimeter. Up front, the pass rush remained relentless, successfully masking any minor vulnerabilities and keeping opposing quarterbacks under constant duress. Supported by the returns of defensive backs like C.J. Gardner-Johnson and a rejuvenated linebacker corps, the Eagles permitted only nine rushing touchdowns all season while forcing 26 total turnovers. Fangio’s complex zone coverages and disciplined front structures transformed a once-maligned group into arguably the single most feared defensive unit across the entire NFL landscape.
The trajectory of the season was defined by a magnificent ten-game winning streak that stretched from mid-October through late December, rendering the NFC East race a foregone conclusion. After a rocky 2-2 start before their early Week 5 bye - including a tough road loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers - the Eagles returned completely revitalized. They absolutely humiliated the New York Giants 28-3 in Week 7, providing Barkley a sweet revenge game, and followed it with convincing victories over the Cincinnati Bengals and bitter rivals the Dallas Cowboys. A grueling December slate tested their mettle, but a gritty 24-19 road win against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 13 proved this squad could triumph in a heavyweight prize fight. Despite a minor 36-33 speed bump against the Commanders in Week 16, Philadelphia rebounded to crush the rival Dallas Cowboys 41-7 a week later to sweep them, solidifying their ironclad grip on the division.
In the postseason, Philadelphia validated their regular season by obliterating every obstacle in their path to a title. The Eagles handled the Green Bay Packers 22-10 in the Wild Card round, survived a 28-22 battle with the Los Angeles Rams, and then absolutely throttled the Commanders 55-23 in the NFC Championship game. The crowning achievement took place in New Orleans at Super Bowl LIX, where the Eagles dismantled Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22, officially ending the Chiefs’ aspirations of an unprecedented three-peat. This second Lombardi Trophy in eight years cemented the 2024 roster as one of the greatest teams in franchise history. Saquon Barkley’s historic rushing milestones and the rapid maturation of rookies Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean left a permanent legacy of dominance in the city of Philadelphia.
