Season Review
Philadelphia Eagles 2017
The 2017 Philadelphia Eagles season entered the year with modest expectations under second-year head coach Doug Pederson, but quickly morphed into an absolute juggernaut. General manager Howie Roseman masterfully reloaded the roster through a series of veteran free-agent signings, adding weapon Alshon Jeffery, powerhouse back LeGarrette Blount, defensive end Chris Long, and a crucial insurance policy in backup quarterback Nick Foles. These additions, alongside rookie draft picks like Derek Barnett and Rasul Douglas, sparked a phenomenal regular season. The Eagles flew to a 13-3 record, capturing the NFC East crown and securing the top seed in the conference. Even when a late-season disaster threatened to derail their ultimate goal, this team proved to be resilient.
Philadelphia fielded an explosive offense that finished third in the league in points with 457 (28.6 ppg) and seventh in total yards. Before his season tragically cut short, sophomore quarterback Carson Wentz played at an MVP level, orchestrating the unit with 3,296 passing yards and a 33 passing touchdowns. The passing attack thrived by distributing the ball effectively to tight end Zach Ertz, who led the team with 74 receptions for 824 yards and eight touchdowns, while Jeffery grabbed nine scores and Nelson Agholor added eight. On the ground, the Eagles ranked third in rushing yards, propelled by Blount’s hard-nosed 766 yards and the midseason acquisition of Jay Ajayi to solidify a dominant ground game.
Defensively, coordinator Jim Schwartz deployed an aggressive, terrifying unit that ranked fourth in both yards and points allowed (18.4 ppg). The absolute bedrock of this defense was its ferocious front four, which completely suffocated opposing ground games to rank first in the NFL in rushing yards allowed at a stingy 1,267 yards. Defensive end Brandon Graham wreaked havoc in the backfield with a team-high 9.5 sacks, while defensive tackle Fletcher Cox anchored the interior to earn Pro Bowl honors. In the secondary, safety Malcolm Jenkins provided veteran leadership, complemented by cornerback Jalen Mills and slot defender Patrick Robinson, who led the defense with four regular-season interceptions.
An early turning point arrived in Week 3 when rookie kicker Jake Elliott drilled a franchise-record 61-yard field goal to beat the rival New York Giants, igniting a powerhouse nine-game winning streak. The Eagles systematically dismantled opponents, including a 51-23 blowout of the Denver Broncos, a 37-9 thrashing of the Dallas Cowboys follow up the next week by a 31-3 walloping of the Chicago Bears. The season reached its apex and lowest depth simultaneously in Week 14 against the Los Angeles Rams; despite clinching the division with a gritty 43-35 victory, Wentz suffered a torn ACL, casting an immediate shadow of doubt over Philadelphia’s championship aspirations.
Instead of collapsing, the underdogs rallied around Nick Foles to orchestrate an immortal playoff run. After slipping past the Atlanta Falcons and obliterating the Minnesota Vikings 38-7 in the NFC Championship, the Eagles went toe-to-toe with the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII. In a breathtaking 41-33 shootout, Foles earned Super Bowl MVP honors, punctuated by the iconic Philly Special trick play caught from Trey Burton. This first-ever Super Bowl title in franchise history cemented the 2017 Eagles as legendary folk heroes in Philadelphia sports lore.
