Season Review
Philadelphia Eagles 2018
Defending a Super Bowl title is one of the hardest things to do in modern sports, and the 2018 Philadelphia Eagles found that out the hard way. Entering the year with massive expectations under head coach Doug Pederson, the reigning champions suffered a brutal championship hangover, stumbling to a 4-6 start before staging a late-season surge to finish 9-7. It was good enough for second place in the NFC East, but far from the dominant force that captured the Lombardi Trophy a year prior. Key offseason acquisitions like veteran defensive tackle Haloti Ngata and deep threat Mike Wallace were brought in to sustain the roster depth, but injuries and general inconsistency plagued the operation from the jump. Still, a resilient locker room managed to crawl into the postseason, proving they still carried the DNA of a champion.
The offensive identity was an asymmetric, pass-heavy attack that ranked a mediocre 18th in points scored with 367 (22.9 ppg) which finished 7th in passing yards. The headline story was the quarterback position, where Carson Wentz started 11 games, throwing for 3,074 yards and 21 touchdowns after recovering from his previous knee injury. When Wentz went down again with a back injury late in the year, postseason hero Nick Foles stepped back into the spotlight, starting five games and orchestrating critical wins down the stretch. Up front, center Jason Kelce anchored the line at an All-Pro level, but the ground game was completely stagnant, ranking 28th in rushing yards behind a committee of Josh Adams and Wendell Smallwood. Instead, the aerial assault relied heavily on tight end Zach Ertz, who put together a historic season by hauling in 116 receptions for 1,163 yards and 8 touchdowns, operating alongside wide receivers Alshon Jeffery and Nelson Agholor.
Defensively, coordinator Jim Schwartz coached a unit that finished 12th in points allowed (21.8 ppg) but sat near the bottom of the league at 23rd in yards surrendered. The interior of the defense was an absolute fortress, spearheaded by first-team All-Pro defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, who put together a monstrous 10.5-sack campaign, and trade-deadline acquisition Michael Bennett, who added 9.0 sacks. Philadelphia fielded a formidable run defense, as opponents often preferred to try their luck through the air as the Eagles ranked 1st in rushing attempts faced and 7th in rushing yards surrendered. However, that stellar front struggled to mask a completely decimated secondary. Safeties Malcolm Jenkins and Corey Graham did everything they could, but injuries to starting cornerbacks forced the Eagles to lean heavily on younger depth like Rasul Douglas and Avonte Maddox, leaving them highly vulnerable to deep passing attacks, where they ranked 30th in passing yards allowed.
The trajectory of the season was a complete roller coaster defined by critical swings. A devastating 48-7 blowout loss on the road against the New Orleans Saints in Week 11 looked like the final nail in the coffin, dropping the team to a dismal 4-6 record. Three weeks later, a heartbreaking 29-23 overtime loss to the arch-rival Dallas Cowboys in Week 14 pushed them to 6-7 and left their playoff hopes on life support. Then, the magic returned. With Foles reinserted at quarterback, the Eagles rattled off three straight wins to close the regular season, highlighted by a gritty 30-23 road upset of the Los Angeles Rams and a dramatic 32-30 win over the Houston Texans. They capped off the regular season with a 24-0 shutout of Washington, capitalizing on outside help to sneak into the wildcard field.
In the postseason, the Eagles added another chapter to their underdog folklore with the famous Double Doink game in the Wild Card round, securing a thrilling 16-15 road victory against the top-ranked Chicago Bears defense. Their luck finally ran out the following week in the Divisional Round during a rematch with the Saints, falling 20-14 after a hard-fought battle in the Superdome. The legacy of this team rests on its pure refusal to die. While they failed to repeat as champions, the individual brilliance of Kelce and Cox earning All-Pro honors, paired with Ertz shattering the single-season reception record for tight ends, cemented the 2018 squad as one of the gutsiest, most resilient groups in franchise history.
