Season Review
Philadelphia Eagles 2022
The 2022 Philadelphia Eagles season was a beautifully executed blueprint of modern roster construction that came agonizingly close to the ultimate prize. Entering head coach Nick Sirianni’s second year with modest expectations, general manager Howie Roseman triggered a fantastic offseason haul by trading for superstar wideout A.J. Brown and making key free-agent acquisitions like edge rusher Haason Reddick and linebacker Kyzir White. The moves paid immediate dividends as Philly blistered the league with a 14-3 regular season record, capturing the NFC East crown and locking down the conference’s top seed. The city was absolutely buzzing as this roster transformed from an intriguing young group into a terrifying ground and pound juggernaut that essentially spent four months treating the rest of the league like a personal speed bag.
Offensively, the Eagles morphed into an elite, multi-dimensional nightmare that finished third in both total yards and points scored (28.1 ppg). Everything revolved around quarterback Jalen Hurts, who silenced all remaining skeptics by throwing for 3,701 yards and 22 touchdowns against just nine interceptions, while adding 760 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground. Roseman’s trade for A.J. Brown looked like highway robbery as the physical wideout racked up 1,496 receiving yards and 11 scores with an average of 17.0 yards per reception, perfectly pairing with DeVonta Smith’s 1,196-yard campaign. Supported by Miles Sanders rushing for 1,269 yards and an offensive line anchored by future Hall of Fame center Jason Kelce and developing tackle Jordan Mailata, Philadelphia ran a RPO-heavy scheme that topped the NFL with 32 rushing touchdowns.
On the other side of the ball, defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon unleashed a fearsome pass rush that carried the team to the league’s number two overall yardage defense and number one passing defense. The unit was a relentless, multi-headed monster that piled up an astounding 69 team sacks, coming within three of the 1984 Bears’ all-time record. Haason Reddick proved to be the best free-agent signing of the cycle, registering 16.0 sacks, while Javon Hargrave, Josh Sweat, and veteran Brandon Graham each chipped in exactly 11.0. When quarterbacks actually had time to throw, they had to navigate a secondary featuring shutdown corners Darius Slay and James Bradberry, along with safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who tied for the NFL lead with six interceptions despite playing in just 12 games.
Philly’s march through the calendar was defined by a historic 8-0 start, establishing them as the league's final unbeaten team before a minor hiccup against Washington in Week 10. They quickly righted the ship with dynamic victories, including a 500-yard offensive explosion against Green Bay where they rushed for a staggering 363 yards. A late-season shoulder sprain to Hurts threatened to derail their momentum, leading to consecutive losses against Dallas and New Orleans with backup Gardner Minshew under center. However, Hurts returned in Week 18 to secure a 22-16 victory over the New York Giants, stabilizing the ship, clinching the division title and ensuring that the road to the Super Bowl would officially run through Lincoln Financial Field.
The postseason began with pure dominance as the Eagles systematically dismantled the Giants 38-7 and the San Francisco 49ers 31-7 to claim the NFC Championship. Super Bowl LVII against the Kansas City Chiefs became an instant classic, but despite Hurts playing out of his mind with four total touchdowns, a costly defensive collapse in the second half resulted in a heartbreaking 38-35 loss. Legacies are tricky, and while this group missed the ultimate prize, their historical significance remains intact. Hurts finished as the MVP runner-up, Kelce earned first-team All-Pro honors, and the historic sack production solidified this 2022 squad as one of the most talented, well-rounded powerhouse teams in the modern history of the franchise.
