Season Review
Philadelphia Eagles 2007
Entering 2007, the Philadelphia Eagles harbored high expectations, but a brutal mix of injuries and inconsistency relegated them to an 8-8 finish, dead last in a powerhouse NFC East. Fresh off a division title, Andy Reid’s Birds looked to fortify their aerial attack by signing free-agent wideout Kevin Curtis to complement Donovan McNabb. Instead, the season felt like a persistent uphill climb from the jump, opening with consecutive losses. While a late-season surge rescued the team from a losing record, the damage was already done. Philadelphia watched January football from the couch, marking just the second time in eight years that Reid missed the playoffs.
The offense finished sixth in yards but 17th in points (21.0 ppg), defined by Brian Westbrook carrying the franchise on his back. Westbrook was a primary example of versatility, racking up 1,333 rushing yards and leading the team with 90 receptions for 771 receiving yards, earning first-team All-Pro honors. McNabb, returning from an ACL tear, threw for 3,324 yards, 19 touchdowns, and only seven interceptions across 14 starts. When McNabb missed time, backup A.J. Feeley went 0-2 as a starter. Curtis proved to be a magnificent signing, clearing the millennium mark with 1,110 yards, while rookie Brent Celek provided flashes of future potential in his limited snaps.
On defense, coordinator Jim Johnson guided the unit to a ninth-place finish in points allowed (18.8 ppg) and tenth in total yards. Defensive end Trent Cole was an absolute terror on the edge, anchoring the pass rush with 12.5 sacks to secure a Pro Bowl nod. Linebacker Omar Gaither flew around the field to record a team-high 102 combined tackles, stabilizing a front seven that allowed just 3.8 yards per carry. The secondary, led by cornerbacks Sheldon Brown and Lito Sheppard, clamped down on aerial attacks, giving up a mere 16 passing touchdowns all year despite safety Brian Dawkins being limited to ten games.
The results on the season were a mixed bag highlighting the teams inconsistency. A spectacular 56-21 demolition of Detroit in Week 3 showcased the team’s ceiling, but it was followed by a 16-3 loss to the Giants. In Week 12, Feeley nearly pulled off the upset of the century, pushing the undefeated Patriots to the brink before falling 31-28. Following a mid-winter slide that dropped them to 5-8, the Eagles finally discovered their identity. They rattled off three straight wins to close the year, highlighted by a gritty 10-6 defensive masterpiece against the rival Cowboys in Dallas, ensuring they went down swinging.
Ultimately, the 2007 campaign goes down as a frustrating bridge year in the Reid-McNabb era rather than a total collapse. Missing the playoffs exposed the team’s vulnerability against elite competition, yet the late-season execution proved the culture remained intact. Westbrook’s historic 2,104 yards from scrimmage cemented his legacy as one of the most dynamic weapons of his generation. While the roster lacked the depth to navigate the grueling NFC East gauntlet this time around, the emergence of young contributors like Cole and Celek laid the groundwork for the team’s return to the NFC Championship game just one year later.
