Season Review
Philadelphia Eagles 2019
The 2019 Philadelphia Eagles season was a gritty lesson of survival, defined by a war of attrition that tested the depth of Doug Pederson’s roster. Entering the year with heightened expectations, the franchise looked to assert dominance in the NFC East after key offseason defensive signings like Malik Jackson and the returning Vinny Curry. Despite a relentless cascade of injuries, Philadelphia scratched and clawed its way to a 9-7-0 record, securing the top spot in the division. It was not a beautiful regular season, but it culminated in an NFC East championship and a trip to the playoffs, proving that this squad possessed the resilient identity forged during their recent championship window.
On offense, Carson Wentz put together a historic blueprint for doing more with less, becoming the first quarterback in NFL history to cross the 4000-yard passing threshold without a single wide receiver reaching 500 receiving yards. Wentz thrown for 4039 yards and 27 touchdowns against just 7 interceptions, engineering 4 game-winning drives along the way. With deep threat DeSean Jackson limited to three games and Alshon Jeffery sidelined after ten, the passing game flowed through the premier tight end tandem of Zach Ertz, who led the team with 88 receptions for 916 yards, and Dallas Goedert. Ground duties were split between the bruising Jordan Howard and rookie draft pick Miles Sanders, who accumulated 1327 scrimmage yards, propelling the offensive unit to a 12th-place rank in points scored (24.1 ppg).
Jim Schwartz’s defense anchored itself on a ferocious front seven that suffocated opposing ground games, finishing 3rd in the league in rushing yards allowed. Defensive tackle Fletcher Cox commanded double teams to earn a Pro Bowl nod, while defensive end Brandon Graham led the pass rush with 8.5 sacks and 15 tackles for loss. Derek Barnett also stepped up with 6.5 sacks, adding teeth to the perimeter rush. However, the secondary struggled to find consistency due to injuries, placing heavy weight on safety Malcolm Jenkins, who led the defense with 81 combined tackles, and Rodney McLeod. Overall, the unit finished 15th in points allowed (22.1 ppg) but proved formidable inside the trenches when games devolved into dogfights.
An autumn slump threatened to derail the entire campaign, punctuated by a three-game losing streak against New England, Seattle, and a baffling 37-31 defensive collapse against the Miami Dolphins that left the Eagles sitting at 5-7. With their backs against the wall, Philadelphia launched a legendary December surge, sweeping their final four games against division rivals. The critical turning point occurred in Week 16 at Lincoln Financial Field, where the Eagles stifled the Dallas Cowboys in a definitive 17-9 victory to control their own destiny. A subsequent 34-17 road win over the New York Giants sealed the division crown, turning a chaotic season into an improbable triumph.
Legacy, however, is often dictated by health, and the Eagles ran out of luck in the Wild Card round against the Seattle Seahawks. Carson Wentz’s highly anticipated playoff debut lasted just four pass attempts before a helmet-to-helmet hit knocked him out of the game, forcing 40-year-old veteran Josh McCown to finish a grueling 17-9 defeat. Center Jason Kelce earned First-Team All-Pro honors, anchoring an offensive line that kept the team competitive through immense turmoil. While it ended in disappointment, the 2019 squad solidified its place in Philadelphia lore as an unforgettable symbol of resilience, epitomizing the ‘next man up’ ethos better than almost any team in modern franchise history.
