Season Review
Philadelphia Eagles 2020
The 2020 Philadelphia Eagles season was a total systemic collapse, finishing a miserable 4-11-1 and dead last finish in a dreadful NFC East. Coming off a division title, expectations were high for Doug Pederson's squad, especially after signing marquee free agent defensive tackle Javon Hargrave. Instead, injuries and quarterback drama completely cratered the campaign. The organizational choice to draft Jalen Hurts in the second round cast a season-long shadow over the franchise, creating an underlying tension that eventually boiled over. A year that began with high postseason hopes ended with Pederson getting fired just three seasons after delivering the city its first Super Bowl trophy.
Philadelphia's offense was an absolute trainwreck, ranking 26th in points (20.9 ppg) and 31st in scoring percentage. Carson Wentz suffered a historic regression, tossing 16 touchdowns against a league-leading 15 interceptions while absorbing 50 sacks in his 12 starts. Behind a decimated offensive line where center Jason Kelce was the lone reliable anchor, the passing game cratered. Miles Sanders provided a rare silver lining, rushing for 867 yards and averaging 5.3 yards per carry, while practice-squad elevated Travis Fulgham led the team with 539 receiving yards. When Hurts took over, he flashed dual-threat capability, adding 1,061 passing yards and 354 rushing yards, but it was too late to salvage a broken unit.
Jim Schwartz's defense spent the entire year fighting an uphill battle, frequently hung out to dry by offensive turnovers. The unit finished 20th in points allowed (26.1 ppg), but maintained a fierce identity up front by racking up 49 sacks. Brandon Graham enjoyed a stellar campaign with a team-high 8.0 sacks, while Fletcher Cox anchored the interior with 6.5 sacks to join him as a Pro Bowl selection. Linebacker Alex Singleton emerged as a tackling machine, accumulating 120 stops alongside Darius Slay who amassed 59 tackles. Still, a vulnerable secondary generated just eight interceptions all year, failing to mask the defense's overall exhaustion.
The timeline of the season was a slow-motion car crash punctuated by strange turning points. A frustrating 23-23 tie against Cincinnati in Week 3 set a dreary tone, though a gritty Week 4 road victory against San Francisco briefly offered hope. The season officially fell apart during a devastating four-game losing streak in November, exposing terminal offensive flaws. The ultimate tipping point arrived in Week 13 against Green Bay, where Wentz was finally benched for Hurts. The rookie delivered a shocking 24-21 upset over New Orleans the following week, but a subsequent three-game skid ensured a miserable finish.
Missing the playoffs, the legacy of the 2020 Eagles is historically significant as the painful bottoming-out that birthed a new era. The season culminated in an infamous Week 17 finale against Washington, where Pederson sparked national outrage by benching Hurts for Nate Sudfeld in the fourth quarter. While the move drew fierce criticism, it secured the number six pick in the draft. No Eagles won individual awards, but this catastrophic season served as the ultimate catalyst, forcing the front office to trade Wentz, reset the culture, and accumulate the assets that directly fueled their rapid return to contention.
