Season Review
Denver Broncos 2020
The 2020 Denver Broncos entered the season hoping Drew Lock could establish himself as a franchise quarterback, but a 5-11 record and a last-place AFC West finish quickly erased that optimism. Head coach Vic Fangio bolstered the roster by signing Melvin Gordon and drafting Jerry Jeudy and Lloyd Cushenberry III. However, injuries and extreme inconsistency derailed the campaign before it started. Denver missed the postseason for the fifth consecutive year, finishing nine games behind Kansas City and leaving management with deep questions about the franchise's direction.
Denver's offense was a masterclass in frustration, ranking 28th in points with 323 (20.2 ppg) and dead last with 32 turnovers. Lock struggled with ball security, tossing 16 touchdowns against a league-high 15 interceptions in 13 starts. Despite the erratic passing game, rookie receiver Jerry Jeudy flashed elite potential with 856 yards, while Noah Fant added 673 yards. On the ground, free-agent signing Melvin Gordon carried the load, grinding out 986 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. Still, self-inflicted mistakes routinely choked away winnable games.
Fangio's defense fought valiantly despite being constantly hung out to dry by the offense, ranking 21st in yards allowed. Safety Justin Simmons anchored the secondary, earning Pro Bowl honors with 96 tackles and a team-high five interceptions. Up front, Malik Reed stepped up to lead the team with eight sacks after Von Miller's season-ending injury, while Bradley Chubb added 7.5 sacks to secure a Pro Bowl nod. Though the run defense surrendered 4.8 yards per carry, the unit kept Denver competitive most weeks.
The season's lowlight came in Week 12 against New Orleans, a game that lives in NFL lore for all the wrong reasons. Due to COVID-19 protocols, Denver's entire quarterback room was ruled ineligible, forcing practice squad receiver Kendall Hinton to start under center. Hinton completed just one pass in an inevitable 31-3 blowout. Beyond that anomaly, agonizing close losses to Tennessee and late-season collapses against the Chargers and Raiders encapsulated a frustrating year defined by missed opportunities.
Missing the playoffs cemented the 2020 Broncos as a team stuck in neutral during the post-Peyton Manning era. While Simmons and Chubb provided defensive building blocks, the season legacy is tied to a league-worst turnover differential and the infamous quarterback-less Sunday. It was a painful developmental year that exposed massive roster flaws and ultimately raised serious doubts about Lock's long-term viability as a premier NFL starter.
