Season Review
Denver Broncos 2001
The 2001 Denver Broncos entered the year under Mike Shanahan attempting to recapture their late-nineties championship magic. After an 11-5 campaign, Denver reloaded by adding free agents Denard Walker, Leon Lett, and Eddie Kennison, while drafting guard Ben Hamilton. Instead, the season devolved into pure mediocrity, ending in a frustrating 8-8 record and a third-place finish in the AFC West. Missing the postseason, this squad became a classic case of what-if, derailed by catastrophic injuries and a complete inability to find sustained momentum.
Denver's offense ranked 10th in points with 340 (21.3 ppg) but plummeted to 22nd in yards after a tragic Week 1 injury to wideout Ed McCaffrey. Quarterback Brian Griese endured a volatile season, throwing for 2,827 yards and 23 touchdowns against 19 costly interceptions. Rod Smith carried the aerial attack, leading the league with 113 caught passes for 1,343 yards and 11 scores. The zone-blocking ground game also splintered; an ailing Terrell Davis managed 701 yards in eight games before his knees betrayed him, forcing Mike Anderson to take over the running game with 678 yards.
Defensively, the Broncos presented a bizarre paradox, ranking 8th in yards allowed but finishing 21st in points surrendered with 339 (21.2 ppg). The unit relied on a ball-hawking secondary featuring cornerback Deltha O'Neal, who snagged a brilliant nine interceptions. Up front, Trevor Pryce and linebacker Bill Romanowski each provided 7.0 sacks to pace the pass rush. Linebacker John Mobley anchored the interior with 93 tackles, while Denard Walker and Jimmy Spencer added three interceptions each but the defense consistently failed to secure stops during high-stakes moments.
The schedule was defined by a maddening inability to build streaks after a 2-0 start. Opening with a 31-20 win over the New York Giants, the team immediately lost McCaffrey for the year. A ten game streak of win-lose-win-lose showed how inconsistent this team was. A painful 26-23 overtime loss to Kansas City in Week 14 may have provided the impetus to break the hot and cold streak but a 32 yard Todd Peterson field goal extinguished hopes of maintaining any momentum. Even after marquee moments like a 26-24 Thanksgiving victory over Dallas and a Week 16 win against Oakland, they folded when it mattered most, dropping the finale 29-10 to Indianapolis.
Finishing 8-8 meant missing the playoffs, confirming that Denver's golden era had officially ended. Historically, this group represents the sad conclusion of the Terrell Davis era balanced against Rod Smith's absolute peak. Despite the underwhelming record, individual talent flooded the roster; Smith, Trevor Pryce, Deltha O'Neal, Al Wilson, Dwayne Carswell, Ian Gold, and kicker Jason Elam - who nailed 31 of 36 field goals - all earned Pro Bowl honors, sealing this team's iteration as a gold-plated disappointment.
