Season Review
Denver Broncos 2004
The 2004 Denver Broncos season centered on one of the most audacious blockbusters in NFL history: trading star running back Clinton Portis for shutdown cornerback Champ Bailey. Coupled with signing veteran safety John Lynch, head coach Mike Shanahan signaled a definitive defensive pivot. Entering the year with high expectations in a brutal AFC West, Denver rode their ground game and a solid defense to a 10-6 record, finishing second in the division. While the regular season was an unpredictable roller coaster, Shanahan successfully navigated this structural transition, guiding his re-engineered roster back into the postseason as a wild-card qualifier.
Denver's offense remained highly explosive, finishing fifth in total yards with 6,332 and ninth in scoring with 381 points (23.8 ppg). Quarterback Jake Plummer delivered a quintessential hot and cold campaign, throwing for 4,089 yards and 27 touchdowns against 20 interceptions. When injuries struck the backfield, fullback-turned-tailback Reuben Droughns stepped up to rush for 1,240 yards. On the perimeter, the dynamic wideout tandem of Rod Smith and Ashley Lelie both surpassed 1,000 yards, with Smith grabbing 79 receptions for 1,144 yards and Lelie stretching defenses at a blistering 20.1 yards per catch.
The retooled defense paid immediate dividends, ranking fourth in yards allowed and ninth in points surrendered conceding 304 (19.0 ppg). Champ Bailey was spectacular in his Denver debut, securing Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro honors, while Lynch stabilized the secondary. Up front, Reggie Hayward led a disciplined pass rush with a career-high 10.5 sacks. The linebacking corps thrived on pure athleticism, anchored by Al Wilson's 105 tackles and first-round draft pick D.J. Williams, who led the roster with 114 combined tackles and finished third in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting.
The 2004 journey was defined by stark hot and cold streaks. Denver started a fiery 5-1, highlighted by a 31-3 demolition of the rival Oakland Raiders. However, midseason vulnerability emerged during a 41-28 Halloween defeat to the Atlanta Falcons, which combined with a loss the week before against the Bengals sparked a late-season slide where they dropped four of six games. Staring down a collapse, the Broncos rallied when it mattered most, winning their final two games. They handled the Tennessee Titans 37-16 on Christmas day before defeating the Indianapolis Colts 33-14 in Week 17 to secure their playoff spot.
The postseason return was short-lived, ending in a brutal 49-24 Wild Card blowout loss in an immediate rematch against the Colts. Despite that bitter end, the 2004 campaign left a lasting legacy as the dawn of the Champ Bailey era in Colorado. It validated Shanahan's legendary zone-blocking system through Droughns' unexpected breakout performance. By integrating elite defensive building blocks alongside a ball control offense, this transition year established the structural blueprint for Denver's competitive rosters throughout the rest of the decade.
