Season Review
Denver Broncos 2015
The 2015 Denver Broncos entered the season facing a fascinating existential crisis, transitioning from the high-scoring John Fox era to new head coach Gary Kubiak's run-heavy system. With a 39-year-old Peyton Manning clearly showing physical decline, the championship window was slammed nearly shut. Offseason additions like safety Darian Stewart and tight end Owen Daniels were crucial patches on a shifting roster. Despite an incredibly clunky offensive transition, Denver ground out a 12-4 record to capture the AFC West. It was an unconventional high-wire act that defied expectations and ultimately ended with the franchise lifting the Lombardi Trophy.
Denver's offense was a bizarre, disjointed unit that ranked a mediocre 19th in scoring with 355 (22.2 ppg) and 16th in total yards. Manning struggled mightily with his efficiency, throwing just 9 touchdowns against a brutal 17 interceptions before injuries forced a temporary changing of the guard. Backup Brock Osweiler stepped into the fire for seven starts, stabilizing the ship with 1,967 passing yards and 10 touchdowns. Wideouts Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders carried the passing game, logging 1,304 and 1,135 yards respectively, while the backfield duo of Ronnie Hillman and C.J. Anderson combined for 12 rushing scores to keep the unit afloat.
The real story was the legendary 'No Fly Zone' defense, a destructive group that carried the team by finishing first in both total yards and passing yards allowed. Coordinated masterfully, this unit featured a relentless pass rush anchored by First-Team All-Pro Von Miller, who registered 11 sacks, alongside DeMarcus Ware's 7.5 takedowns. The secondary was an absolute fortress; Pro Bowl cornerbacks Aqib Talib and Chris Harris Jr. combined for five regular-season interceptions and three defensive touchdowns. Inside linebackers Danny Trevathan and Brandon Marshall cleaned up everything else, combining for an impressive 211 total tackles.
Denver's regular season was defined by high-stakes drama and defensive rescues. They surged to a 7-0 start before Manning's injuries culminated in a five-turnover nightmare against Kansas City. The ultimate turning point arrived in Week 12 against the undefeated New England Patriots, where Osweiler engineered a thrilling overtime victory capped by a walk-off 48 yard C.J Anderson touchdown run in the snow. A late December slide against Oakland and Pittsburgh threatened their postseason positioning, but a dramatic Manning cameo in the regular-season finale against San Diego secured the crucial top seed in the AFC.
In the postseason, the defense immortalized themselves alongside some of the great units in NFL history. After outlasting Pittsburgh and edging Tom Brady's Patriots 20-18 in an intense AFC Championship game, Denver suffocated the top-ranked Carolina Panthers 24-10 in Super Bowl 50. Von Miller earned Super Bowl MVP honors following a dominant performance. This championship completely cemented Peyton Manning's legacy, allowing one of the game's greatest quarterbacks to ride off into retirement as a champion by leaning on one of the finest defensive masterpieces ever assembled.
