Season Review
Denver Broncos 2005
The 2005 Denver Broncos entered the season facing heavy pressure to break through their recent postseason glass ceiling. Head coach Mike Shanahan overhauled his defense by signing key free agents like Courtney Brown, Ian Gold, and John Engelberger, while bringing in veteran back Ron Dayne. The roster reconstruction worked beautifully, as Denver recaptured its physical identity to finish with a stellar 13-3 record, easily capturing the AFC West division title. Securing the conference's number two seed, the Broncos reestablished Mile High Stadium as a postseason fortress, ultimately marching all the way to the AFC Championship game.
Denver's offense relied on a devastatingly efficient ground game that propelled them to fifth in total yards and seventh in scoring with 395 points (24.7 ppg). Quarterback Jake Plummer played the most disciplined football of his career, throwing for 3,366 yards and 18 touchdowns against a minuscule seven interceptions. Shanahan's zone-blocking scheme, featuring rookie lineman Chris Myers, opened massive lanes for a rushing attack that ranked second in the NFL. Mike Anderson powered his way to 1,014 yards and 12 touchdowns, while Tatum Bell provided a lethal change of pace, adding 921 yards. Wideout Rod Smith anchored the passing game, catching 85 balls for 1,105 yards.
Defensively, the Broncos were an elite, bend-but-don't-break unit that finished third in points allowed, yielding just 258 points at 16.1 points per game. Though they ranked a modest 15th in total yards, Denver excelled at forcing mistakes, ranking fourth with 36 takeaways. Cornerback Champ Bailey put together a legendary campaign, recording eight interceptions and returning two for scores. Bailey was joined in the secondary by Pro Bowl safety John Lynch, who registered four sacks, while linebacker Al Wilson earned first-team All-Pro honors as the unit's emotional centerpiece with 73 tackles. Up front, new additions like Ian Gold solidified a defense that gave up just ten rushing touchdowns.
The road to 13-3 began with an ugly 34-10 blowout loss against Miami, but Denver quickly rebounded by reeling off five consecutive wins, including a statement 28-20 victory over the New England Patriots in Week 6. A Thanksgiving Day overtime thriller against the Dallas Cowboys ended in a 24-21 win, proving the team's grit. Despite a tough Week 13 division loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Broncos closed out December with a four-game winning streak. They capped off the regular season with a dominant 23-7 win over the rival Chargers, validating their elite status.
In the playoffs, Denver hosted New England in the Divisional Round, securing a 27-13 win that famously shattered the Patriots' ten-game postseason winning streak. Although the ride ended a week later with a 34-17 defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship, the season remains significant. The Broncos sent five players to the Pro Bowl — Plummer, Smith, Lynch, Wilson, and Bailey. Ultimately, the 2005 squad stood out as the pinnacle of the post-Elway era, remembered for its relentless ground attack, defensive takeaways, and a dominant run that electrified Colorado.
