Season Review
Denver Broncos 2018
The 2018 Denver Broncos entered the year desperate to erase the stink of a losing campaign, signing free-agent quarterback Case Keenum and drafting edge rusher Bradley Chubb fifth overall to restore their identity. Under head coach Vance Joseph, expectations were cautiously optimistic. Instead, Denver stumbled to a 6-10 record, finishing third in the AFC West and missing the postseason. Despite flashes of grit, structural flaws and an inability to close out tight games doomed the campaign, proving the franchise was drifting further away from its championship past.
On offense, Denver finished a mediocre 24th in points scored with 329 (20.6 ppg) and 19th in total yards. Case Keenum started all 16 games, throwing for 3,890 yards and 18 touchdowns, but his efficiency plummeted due to 15 interceptions and a low 81.2 rating. The lone saving grace was undrafted rookie running back Phillip Lindsay, who exploded for 1,037 rushing yards and nine touchdowns at a crisp 5.4 yards per carry. Veteran Emmanuel Sanders chipped in 868 receiving yards before injury, forcing rookie Courtland Sutton into a primary role.
Defensively, Denver ranked a respectable 13th in points allowed with 349 (21.8 ppg) but dropped to 22nd in total yards. The undisputed strength was a fierce edge rush spearheaded by Von Miller, who racked up 14.5 sacks and 26 quarterback hits. Rookie Bradley Chubb thrived opposite him, adding 12.0 sacks to torment opposing blockers. In the secondary, cornerback Chris Harris Jr. anchored the coverage with three interceptions across 12 starts, while safety Justin Simmons flew around the field to add 97 combined tackles to Todd Davis' 114 tackles from the linebacking corps.
The season was a roller coaster of streaks. Denver teased the Mile High faithful with a 2-0 start before cratering into a painful four-game losing streak, including a tight 27-23 loss to Kansas City. The team engineered a shocking mid-season revival, winning three straight over the Chargers, Steelers, and Bengals to reach 6-6 and rejoin the playoff hunt. However, a deflating Week 14 loss to the rebuilding San Francisco 49ers broke their spirit, triggering a season-ending four-game collapse that sealed their fate.
Missing the playoffs for a third straight year cost Vance Joseph his job. Historically, the 2018 Broncos are remembered as a flawed bridge team defined by individual milestones. The campaign belongs to Phillip Lindsay, who became the first undrafted rookie offensive player named a Pro Bowler. Coupled with Miller's elite play and Chubb's rookie dominance, these individual highlights provided a silver lining for an otherwise transition-era roster that simply lacked the championship pedigree to compete in a loaded AFC West.
