Season Review
Denver Broncos 2012
The 2012 Denver Broncos campaign was defined by one of the highest-stakes gambles in NFL history. Executive John Elway went all-in by signing future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning, who was returning from multiple neck surgeries that kept him out of football for a year. Manning was joined by free agents Tracy Porter and Mike Adams, while the draft added key pieces like Derek Wolfe, Malik Jackson, and Danny Trevathan. Head coach John Fox steered a roster burdened with instant championship expectations to a dominant first-place finish in the AFC West with an impressive 13-3-0 record, completing a spectacular regular season masterclass.
Denver's offense transformed into a clinical machine, finishing second in the league in scoring with 481 points (30.1 ppg) and fourth in yards at 6,366. Manning answered every health question by orchestrating an efficient aerial assault, throwing for 4,659 yards, 37 touchdowns and just 11 interceptions for a 105.8 passer rating. Demaryius Thomas emerged as a premier weapon, catching 94 passes for 1,434 yards and 10 scores, while Eric Decker added 1,064 yards and a team-high 13 touchdowns. On the ground, veteran Willis McGahee provided tough yards with 731 rushing yards before Knowshon Moreno helped shoulder the late-season load.
The Denver defense was just as terrifying as the offense, finishing second in total yards allowed at 4,652 and fourth in points allowed with 289 (18.1 ppg). A relentless pass rush was anchored by linebacker Von Miller, who recorded 18.5 sacks and 28 tackles for loss, while Elvis Dumervil added 11.0 sacks. Linebacker Wesley Woodyard led the team with 117 combined tackles. In the secondary, veteran Champ Bailey paired with Chris Harris Jr., who snagged three interceptions. Choking out opponents, the Broncos defense led the league in net yards allowed per pass attempt.
The season was a tale of two halves, starting with an uninspiring 2-3 stretch with losses to Atlanta, Houston, and New England. Everything shifted on October 15 against the rival San Diego Chargers; trailing 24-0 at halftime, Denver exploded for 35 unanswered points to win 35-24. That turning point sparked an 11-game winning streak to close the regular season. This blistering run included statement blowouts like a 34-14 dismantling of the New Orleans Saints and a 34-17 road thrashing of the Baltimore Ravens, locking up the top seed in the AFC.
The legacy of this powerhouse team is ultimately intertwined with a heartbreaking playoff exit, losing a double-overtime thriller 38-35 to the Baltimore Ravens in the Divisional Round. Despite the early postseason exit, the historical significance of their regular season remains immense. Manning completed a legendary comeback, winning Comeback Player of the Year while finishing runner-up for league MVP and Offensive Player of the Year. Miller also finished runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year, cementing this squad as the foundation for an era of unprecedented offensive dominance in Denver.
