Season Review
Denver Broncos 2000
Entering the 2000 season, Mike Shanahan's Denver Broncos were bent on recapturing the magic of their late-nineties championship dynasty. Coming off a disappointing transition year, Denver reloaded by drafting defensive back Deltha O'Neal and signing free agents Lester Archambeau, Terrell Buckley and Kavika Pittman to bolster the roster. The adjustments worked beautifully as the Broncos engineered a strong 11-5 record. They finished second in a fierce AFC West division behind Oakland, comfortably securing a playoff berth. Although their campaign concluded with an early postseason exit, this explosive regular-season resurgence proved that Denver was once again an elite conference powerhouse.
Denver's high-flying offense was a juggernaut, ranking second in the league in points with 485 (30.3 ppg) and total yards with 6,554. When franchise icon Terrell Davis was limited to five games, rookie Mike Anderson stepped up spectacularly, punishing defenses for 1,487 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns. This dominant ground game perfectly set up a balanced passing attack led by Brian Griese, who threw for 2,688 yards and 19 touchdowns with a stellar 102.9 rating before injury forced him to split time with Gus Frerotte. Out wide, Rod Smith caught 100 passes for 1,602 yards while Ed McCaffrey added 1,317 yards.
While the offense lit up scoreboards, the defense played a high-stakes style that relied on turnovers to mask severe yardage concessions. They surrendered significant ground, finishing 24th in yards allowed and suffering a collapse in a Week 8 loss to Cincinnati by giving up 407 rushing yards. However, they compensated by forcing 44 turnovers, ranking second in the NFL with 27 interceptions. Terrell Buckley led the secondary with six picks, while defensive tackle Trevor Pryce dominated up front with 12.0 sacks. Supported by Kavika Pittman's 7.0 sacks and linebacker Bill Romanowski, they excelled at creating chaos.
The regular-season schedule was a ride defined by dominant streaks and sudden speed bumps. It opened with a wild 41-36 shootout loss to St. Louis, but the true turning point arrived after a midseason slump left them sitting at 4-4. Shanahan rallied his squad after the Week 9 bye for a magnificent six-game winning streak, featuring tense, crucial victories over rivals Oakland and San Diego. After a late December slip-up against Kansas City, the Broncos rebounded forcefully in Week 17, dismantling the San Francisco 49ers 38-9 to ensure they entered the tournament with plenty of confidence and momentum.
Their postseason journey ended abruptly in the Wild Card round with a definitive 21-3 loss to a dominant Baltimore Ravens defense. With Griese sidelined, Gus Frerotte faced a relentless pass rush, managing just 124 yards as Denver's explosive offense was completely neutralized. Despite the bitter exit, the team's historical legacy remains cemented by individual brilliance. Mike Anderson won the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award, while center Tom Nalen, Trevor Pryce, Rod Smith, and Griese all earned Pro Bowl selections, validating this season as one of the most entertaining in the storied history of the team.
