Season Review
Houston Texans 2021
The 2021 Houston Texans season was an exercise in pure survival, an administrative gap year masquerading as an NFL campaign. With the franchise trapped in the fallout of organizational instability, the Texans handed the clipboard to David Culley, a veteran assistant tasked with navigating a roster stripped of its identity. Expectations were non-existent, and the reality was just as unforgiving, as the team stumbled to a 4-13 record and finished a distant third in the AFC South. General Manager Nick Caserio flooded the facility with low-cost veterans on short-term deals, bringing in quarterback Tyrod Taylor, center Justin Britt, and a rotating committee of running backs like Mark Ingram to patch over a barren depth chart. By the time winter rolled around, the goal was less about competing for the postseason and more about discovering which pieces of the roster belonged in the franchise long-term plans.
Predictably, the offense struggled to find traction, finishing dead last in the league in total yards and 30th in points scored, averaging 16.5 point per contest. A hamstring injury to Tyrod Taylor thrust third-round rookie Davis Mills into the fire, and while the Stanford product showed flashes of competence - throwing for 2,664 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions across 11 starts - the supporting cast offered minimal help. The ground game was an absolute desert, ranking last in the NFL with just 1,422 yards and a pathetic 3.4 yards per attempt split among Rex Burkhead, David Johnson, and Ingram. The lone bright spot was veteran wideout Brandin Cooks, a consummate professional who defied the surrounding chaos to haul in 90 receptions for 1,037 yards and six touchdowns, while rookie receiver Nico Collins chipped in 446 yards during his developmental campaign.
Defensively, coordinator Lovie Smith deployed a traditional, takeaway-reliant cover-2 scheme that yielded varied results. The unit ranked 31st in yards allowed and 27th in points surrendered (26.6 ppg), consistently crushed by a run defense that leaked 2,418 yards on the ground. However, they managed to stay afloat in games by forcing 25 turnovers, good for 10th in the NFL. Sophomore defensive end Jonathan Greenard emerged as a legitimate building block, racking up a team-high 8.0 sacks and 12 quarterback hits despite playing in only 12 games. In the secondary, free-agent addition Desmond King stabilized the cornerback spot with 93 tackles and three interceptions, while linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill played like a man possessed, leading the team with 108 tackles and 13 tackles for loss.
Despite the bleak record, the Texans showed an uncanny ability to keep fighting, scratching out moments of resilience when few expected it. After a horrid 1-8 start that included an embarrassing 40-0 blowout against the Buffalo Bills, the Texans pulled off the shocker of the season in Week 11. Traveling to Nashville as massive underdogs, Houston intercepted Ryan Tannehill four times in a torrential downpour, riding three Ka'imi Fairbairn field goals to a stunning 22-13 upset of the top-seeded Tennessee Titans. A late-December resurgence saw the Texans drop 41 points on the playoff-bound Los Angeles Chargers, highlighted by Rex Burkhead exploding for 149 rushing yards and two scores, proving this roster would still fight even as the season slipped away.
A 4-13 campaign left the 2021 Texans to be remembered as a bridge season between eras. There were no individual league awards or Pro Bowl nods for this squad, and the front office chose to dismiss David Culley after just one year on the job. Yet, the legacy of this specific team is surprisingly vital; it was the crucible that forced the franchise to strip itself down to the studs. The foundational reps given to young pieces like Mills, Collins, and Greenard provided the clarity Caserio needed to kickstart a comprehensive rebuild, transforming a year of misery into the painful first step toward Houston's football future.
