Season Review

Houston Texans 2018

Entering the 2018 NFL campaign, Bill O’Brien’s Houston Texans were under immense pressure following a dismal, injury-plagued 4-12 run the previous year. To orchestrate a turnaround, the front office aggressively bolstered the secondary by signing high-profile free agents like Tyrann Mathieu and Aaron Colvin, while securing Zach Fulton and Senio Kelemete to anchor an offensive line that desperately needed reinforcement. The investment paid off heavily as the Texans mounted a memorable rally to finish the season with an 11-5 record, clinching the AFC South division crown. Despite a brutal 0–3 start that sent alarm bells ringing throughout Houston, the Texans became the first team since 1992 to overcome such a deficit and reach the postseason, capturing the AFC South in the process.

The resurrection of the offense rested squarely on the shoulders of sophomore quarterback Deshaun Watson, who put together a magnificent Pro Bowl campaign. Watson completed 68.3 percent of his passes for 4,165 yards and 26 touchdowns, adding 551 yards and five scores on the ground, though he endured a brutal league-high 62 sacks. When he had time to throw, Watson leaned heavily on elite wideout DeAndre Hopkins, who turned in a First-Team All-Pro season with 115 receptions for 1,572 yards and 11 touchdowns. Bolstered by Pro Bowl running back Lamar Miller’s 973 rushing yards, Houston’s offense ranked 11th in the league in points scored with 402 (25.1 ppg), leaning on game-changing explosive chunk plays rather than methodical sustained efficiency.

Houston’s true identity, however, belonged to a vicious defensive unit that finished fourth in the NFL in points allowed, surrendering just 316 points (19.8 ppg) all season. Legendary defensive end J.J. Watt put together a spectacular comeback campaign, racking up 16.0 sacks and seven forced fumbles to earn First-Team All-Pro recognition. Alongside Watt, Jadeveon Clowney provided relentless pressure from the edge with 9.0 sacks, while Benardrick McKinney marshaled the second level with 105 total tackles. The secondary was revitalized by the veteran presence of Mathieu, who logged 89 tackles and two interceptions, alongside third-round rookie sensation Justin Reid, who anchored the backend with three interceptions and a stunning 101-yard pick-six.

The turning point of the campaign materialized in Week 4 against the division-rival Indianapolis Colts, where a 37-34 overtime victory snapped Houston's early losing streak and sparked a spectacular nine-game winning run. That streak featured a series of nail-biters, including a tense 19-16 overtime triumph against the Dallas Cowboys and a 42-23 blowout over the Miami Dolphins. While a narrow Week 14 loss to the Colts halted the regular-season momentum, the Texans quickly regrouped. They closed out December by winning two of their final three games, punctuated by a dominant 20-3 suffocating performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 17 to secure the division title.

The magical regular-season run culminated in a bitter postseason exit during the AFC Wild Card round. The familiar Indianapolis Colts marched into NRG Stadium and thoroughly neutralized the Texans in a 21-7 defeat, exposing Houston's protection issues by sacking Watson three times and limiting the home team to a solitary touchdown. While the playoff exit left a sour taste, the 2018 squad established a legacy as one of the most resilient groups in franchise history. Marked by the individual brilliance of Hopkins and Watt, this team proved that a franchise could stare down an 0-3 abyss and still emerge as division champions.
