Season Review
Houston Texans 2016
The 2016 Houston Texans campaign stands as tightrope act, an exercise in winning in spite of a misfire at the sport’s most important position. Entering the year with high expectations under head coach Bill O’Brien, the front office pushed all their chips into the center by signing quarterback Brock Osweiler to a massive free-agent contract. They paired him with fellow high-profile signee running back Lamar Miller and rookie speedster Will Fuller, attempting to build a high-flying modern offense. The result was a bizarrely uneven 9-7 regular-season record, which was still somehow good enough to finish 1st in a weak AFC South division. Despite a glaring negative point differential and an offense that struggled weekly, Houston navigated a highly volatile schedule to clinch their second consecutive division crown and advance to the postseason.
To say the offense struggled would be an understatement; it was an outright chore to watch for most of the season. Houston ranked a dismal 28th in points scored (17.4 ppg) and 29th in total yards, entirely due to a passing game that could never get off the ground. Osweiler threw 15 touchdowns against 16 costly interceptions, posting an uninspiring 72.2 passer rating while failing to generate chemistry with elite wideout DeAndre Hopkins. Hopkins was limited to 954 receiving yards and four touchdowns, numbers far below his usual production. The saving grace was Lamar Miller, who grinded out 1,073 rushing yards and five touchdowns as the clear focal point of a run-first attack. The team even turned to backup quarterback Tom Savage for a brief two-game spark down the stretch, illustrating just how desperate the offensive situation had become.
If the offense was a malfunctioning engine, the defense was a pristine sports car that carried the entire franchise on its back. Romeo Crennel’s unit finished the regular season ranked 1st in total yards allowed and 11th in points allowed (20.5 ppg), a truly staggering achievement considering they lost generational superstar J.J. Watt to a back injury after just three games. In Watt’s absence, Jadeveon Clowney enjoyed a massive breakout year, racking up 16 tackles for loss and six sacks to earn a Pro Bowl nod. The secondary was absolutely elite, spearheaded by breakout cornerback A.J. Bouye, who recorded 16 passes defended, alongside veteran safety Quintin Demps, who picked off a team-high six passes. Linebackers Benardrick McKinney and Whitney Mercilus both earned second-team All-Pro honors, cementing a suffocating defensive front that made life miserable for opposing quarterbacks.
Every week felt like a dramatic struggle, defined by extreme peaks and valley-deep collapses. The Texans showed grit early with a thrilling 26-23 overtime victory against the rival Indianapolis Colts in Week 6, but they were routinely blown out by elite competition, including a embarrassing 27-0 shutout loss to the New England Patriots in Week 3 and a 27-9 loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 7. The real turning point arrived in December during a three-game losing streak that threatened to derail their postseason hopes entirely. O’Brien finally benched Osweiler during a Week 15 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars after consecutive interceptions, allowing Savage to spark a 21-20 comeback victory. A gritty 12-10 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Christmas Eve secured the division title, proving this team knew how to survive ugly games.
In the playoffs, the Texans caught a massive break in the Wild Card round, facing an Oakland Raiders squad down to their third-string quarterback, resulting in an easy 27-14 victory at NRG Stadium. Their luck ran out the following weekend in Foxborough, where three costly interceptions doomed them to a 34-16 loss against the eventual champion Patriots. Historically, this team is remembered as an elite defense that was utterly handcuffed by bad quarterback play, serving as a cautionary tale about rushing into massive free-agent contracts. While Clowney, McKinney, and Bouye proved they were championship-caliber anchors, the 2016 season will forever be defined as a year of what-ifs, leaving fans to wonder what this roster could have achieved with even average play under center.
