Season Review
Houston Texans 2013
Entering 2013, expectations for the Houston Texans were sky-high after consecutive AFC South titles. Instead, the season cratered into an unmitigated disaster, resulting in a miserable 2-14 record and a last-place division finish. Offseason signings of veterans Ed Reed and fullback Greg Jones failed to stabilize the roster. A shocking 11-game losing streak cost head coach Gary Kubiak his job after a 2-11 start, leaving defensive coordinator Wade Phillips to lose the final three games as interim coach. A presumed Super Bowl run shockingly transformed into securing the top overall draft choice.
The offense crumbled due to quarterback instability, ranking 31st in scoring with 276 points (17.3 ppg) despite finishing 11th in total yards. Gary Kubiak's system collapsed as starter Matt Schaub threw 14 interceptions against 10 touchdowns before his benching. Sophomore Case Keenum injected brief energy with 1,760 passing yards and 9 scores but went 0-8 as a starter. With star running back Arian Foster limited to eight games, Ben Tate carried the load for 771 rushing yards. Meanwhile, Andre Johnson remained elite with 109 catches for 1,407 yards, mentoring rookie DeAndre Hopkins who grabbed 52 receptions for 802 yards.
Defensively, Wade Phillips' unit presented a bizarre statistical paradox. Houston ranked an impressive 7th in yards allowed and 3rd in pass defense, yet surrendered 428 points (26.8 ppg) to rank 24th in scoring defense. The legendary J.J. Watt anchored the front, defying the slide with 10.5 sacks, 22 tackles for loss, and 46 quarterback hits. Whitney Mercilus added 7.0 sacks, while Johnathan Joseph secured 3 interceptions. However, Ed Reed - at age 35 - proved to be a high-profile bust and was cut midseason, while the leaky run defense surrendered 1,958 yards on the year.
The season's trajectory shifted violently after a promising 2-0 start featuring a comeback against the Chargers and an overtime win over the Titans. The fatal turning point occurred in Week 4 against the Seahawks; holding a late lead, a Matt Schaub pick-six triggered a heartbreaking overtime loss that broke the team's confidence. Houston plummeted into a tailspin of narrow defeats and blowout losses, including a traumatic night against the Colts where Kubiak collapsed on the field. Back-to-back losses to the rival Jaguars over a two week period finalized the complete franchise meltdown.
This squad remains a cautionary tale of how rapidly playoff windows can close. Despite featuring superstars J.J. Watt and Andre Johnson, the Texans repeatedly sabotaged themselves. They finished last in the NFL with only 11 takeaways, recorded a staggering -20 turnover differential, and endured erratic quarterback play all season. In one of the NFL's greatest statistical anomalies, Houston amassed the yardage of a competitive team but limped to a 2-14 finish. The silver lining of this painful campaign was the emergence of rookie draft picks Hopkins and D.J. Swearinger, setting the stage for a total organizational reset after hitting rock bottom.
