Season Review
Houston Texans 2011
The 2011 Houston Texans campaign was a milestone narrative of franchise breakthroughs, severe adversity, and a defensive transformation. Entering the season under head coach Gary Kubiak, expectations were mixed for a franchise that had never made the postseason. To combat a historic pass defense vulnerability, Houston aggressively signed veteran defensive backs Johnathan Joseph and Danieal Manning in free agency, while using their first-round draft choice on defensive end J.J. Watt. The overhaul paid immediate dividends as the Texans marched to a 10-6 regular season record, capturing the first AFC South division title in franchise history despite losing their top two quarterbacks and star receiver to significant injuries.
Offensively, Houston leaned on a brutal, top-ranked zone-running scheme that finished first in league attempts and second in rushing yards with 2,448. Pro Bowl running back Arian Foster spearheaded the ground attack with 1,224 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns in just 13 games, while Ben Tate provided a lethal secondary punch with 942 rushing yards and a further 4 touchdowns. When healthy, quarterback Matt Schaub was highly efficient, throwing for 2,479 yards and 15 touchdowns against just 6 interceptions over 10 starts. Despite elite wideout Andre Johnson being limited to seven regular-season contests, the team finished 10th in scoring offense (23.8 ppg) by leaning heavily on the ground game and tight end Owen Daniels, who registered a team-high 54 receptions.
The real story in Houston was a defensive unit that vaulted to 4th in points allowed (17.4 ppg) and 2nd in total yards allowed under new coordinator Wade Phillips. J.J. Watt made an immediate impact with 5.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss, foreshadowing his future dominance. Outside linebacker Connor Barwin tormenting opposing tackles to the tune of a team-high 11.5 sacks, while inside linebacker Brian Cushing earned second-team All-Pro honors after racking up 114 combined tackles. In the secondary, the high-priced investment in Johnathan Joseph yielded immediate returns, as the Pro Bowl cornerback notched 4 interceptions and 15 passes defended to help lock down opposing aerial attacks.
Houston started the year strong, securing early statement wins over Indianapolis and Pittsburgh, but the season reached a critical turning point in mid-November. During a Week 10 win over Tampa Bay that came amidst a seven game winning streak, Matt Schaub suffered a season-ending foot injury, followed shortly by backup Matt Leinart going down. Forced to rely on third-string rookie quarterback T.J. Yates, the Texans showed immense grit by clinching the division with a thrilling 20-19 victory over Cincinnati in Week 14. Though the team suffered a three-game losing streak to close out the regular season while resting key players, the foundation for the postseason was already firmly established.
In the franchise's inaugural playoff game, Yates managed the offense efficiently while Arian Foster ran wild for 153 yards and two scores in a 31-10 Wild Card rout of the Bengals. The magical run ended the following week in a tight 20-13 Divisional Round loss to the Baltimore Ravens, dictated by four costly turnovers. Despite the bittersweet exit, the 2011 Texans forever altered the trajectory of the franchise. By overcoming a catastrophic quarterback room collapse and establishing a perennial defensive powerhouse, this squad proved that Houston belonged on the playoff stage.
