Season Review
Houston Texans 2019
The 2019 Houston Texans season was the another roller coaster ride operated by Bill O’Brien. A 10-6 campaign that yielded an AFC South division title but also exposed the flaws of the franchise. Houston entered the year under intense scrutiny after O’Brien assumed general manager duties, immediately making waves by drafting offensive tackle Tytus Howard in the first round and executing a blockbuster trade for Laremy Tunsil to protect their franchise asset under center. They also fortified the secondary by adding safety Tashaun Gipson alongside cornerbacks Bradley Roby and Briean Boddy-Calhoun. While the team secured double-digit wins and a playoff berth, their league rankings - 13th in total offense and a dismal 28th in total defense- foreshadowed a team operating on a razor-thin margin for error.
Deshaun Watson carried the offense on his back, throwing for 3,852 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while earning Pro Bowl honors. The system relied heavily on Watson’s improvisational magic and his telepathic connection with wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who hauled in 104 receptions for 1,165 yards and seven touchdowns, earning first-team All-Pro recognition. O’Brien maintained a heavy ground attack by leaning on a newly formed backfield pairing of Carlos Hyde, who ground out 1,070 rushing yards, and Duke Johnson, who added 410 yards on the ground and another 410 through the air. Tight end Darren Fells emerged as a critical red-zone target, grabbing seven touchdown receptions, which helped Houston finish 14th in the league in points scored with 378 (23.6 ppg).
Defensively, the Texans struggled mightily without a consistent counter-punch, finishing 19th in points allowed (24.1 ppg) and surrendered a staggering 4,276 yards through the air. The unit took a massive hit when defensive anchor J.J. Watt went down with a torn pectoral muscle in Week 8, leaving the pass rush starved for production outside of Whitney Mercilus, who led the team with 7.5 sacks. Inside linebacker Zach Cunningham was a bright spot, racked up a team-high 142 combined tackles to keep the run defense respectable. In the secondary, Gipson led the team with three interceptions, while young safety Justin Reid chipped in two picks, but the unit routinely leaked yardage and ranked 29th against the pass.
Key moments throughout the schedule perfectly illustrated this team’s volatile nature. They showcased their ceiling early with a thrilling 31-24 road victory against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 6 and a dominant 28-22 prime-time win over the New England Patriots in Week 13. However, the floor was incredibly low, evidenced by a humiliating 41-7 blowout loss to the Baltimore Ravens and a baffling 38-24 home defeat against a mediocre Denver Broncos squad. They managed to steady the ship when it mattered most, winning four of their final six games - including a crucial 24-21 divisional road win against the Tennessee Titans - to secure the AFC South crown before resting starters in the season finale.
In the postseason, the Texans delivered a signature moment before the house of cards collapsed. Down 16-0 against the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round, Watson engineered an incredible comeback, highlighted by an overtime escape from two defenders to set up the game-winning field goal in a 22-19 triumph. The ride ended brutally the following week in Kansas City; after sprinting to a shocking 24-0 lead, O’Brien’s squad surrendered 51 of the next 58 points in a 51-31 Divisional round meltdown. The season remains a turning point in franchise history, representing the absolute peak of the Watson-Hopkins era right before the front office famously dismantled the roster in the ensuing offseason.
