Season Review

Houston Texans 2012

Entering the 2012 NFL campaign, Gary Kubiakโ€™s Houston Texans were no longer the lovable underdogs knocking on the postseason door; they were legitimate championship contenders with a massive target on their chests. Coming off their first division title in franchise history, Houston doubled down on continuity while fortifying the roster with key additions like veteran linebacker Bradie James, running back Justin Forsett, and highly touted draft picks Whitney Mercilus and Brandon Brooks. The blueprint worked beautifully for the majority of the year, culminating in a franchise-best 12-4 regular season record and a consecutive AFC South crown. While they fell short of the ultimate prize, the season proved that the Texans had officially graduated into the upper echelon of the AFC.

OC Rick Dennison handled the controls of a ground and pound offensive machine that finished the regular season ranked 7th in total yards and 8th in scoring with 416 points (26.0 ppg). At the center of it all was quarterback Matt Schaub, who earned Pro Bowl honors by throwing for 4,008 yards and 22 touchdowns against just 12 interceptions while orchestrating the attack. The engine of the offense, was running back Arian Foster, who carried the ball a bruising 351 times for 1,424 yards and a league-leading 15 rushing touchdowns. When the Texans wanted to stretch the field, Schaub repeatedly dialed up future Hall of Fame wide receiver Andre Johnson, who put together a masterful 112-catch, 1,598-yard campaign that earned him second-team All-Pro honors, while tight end Owen Daniels chipped in 716 yards as a reliable safety valve.

On the other side of the ball, defensive coordinator Wade Phillips deployed a ferocious unit that finished the regular season ranked 7th in total yards allowed and 9th in scoring defense (20.7 ppg). The entire scheme revolved around defensive end J.J. Watt, who put together one of the most dominant individual defensive campaigns in NFL history. Watt absolutely terrorized opposing offensive lines, racking up 20.5 sacks, 39 tackles for loss, 43 quarterback hits and a mind-boggling 16 passes defended, which routinely disrupted passing lanes. Supported by a physical secondary featuring Pro Bowl cornerback Johnathan Joseph and safety Glover Quin, Houston boasted the league's top-ranked defense in rushing touchdowns allowed, giving up just 5 scores on the ground all year.

Notable key moments came early and often as the Texans exploded out of the gate, matching the league's best start by winning 11 of their first 12 contests. The early highlight came in Week 3 with a statement 31-25 road win against Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos, followed by a 43-13 demolition of the Baltimore Ravens in Week 7. Houston also showed tremendous grit in back-to-back overtime thriller victories against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Detroit Lions during a tight five-day stretch in November. However, the season took a sharp left turn in December during a disastrous Monday Night Football showdown in Foxborough, where the New England Patriots dismantled the Texans 42-14, sparking a late-season stumble where Houston lost three of their final four games and squandered the top seed in the conference.

Forced into the wild-card route, the Texans took care of business at home by smothering the Cincinnati Bengals 19-13, highlighted by Arian Foster rushing for 140 yards on the ground. The divisional round brought a highly anticipated rematch in Foxborough, but history repeated itself as Tom Brady and the Patriots exposed Houston's defensive limitations in a season-ending 41-28 defeat. Despite the bitter exit, the 2012 Texans cemented their legacy as the finest iteration of the franchise up to that point. J.J. Watt was unanimously named the Associated Press NFL Defensive Player of the Year, providing a silver lining for a star-studded squad that proved they could stand toe-to-toe with the league's heavyweight royalty.
