Season Review

Detroit Lions 2022

The 2022 Detroit Lions season felt like the moment a long-running, depressing franchise finally remembered how to have fun. Coming off a miserable three-win campaign, head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes spent the summer as the darlings of HBO’s Hard Knocks, but once the season started they built an identity based on pure grit and aggressive fourth-down decisions. The season started like a horror movie, with the team collapsing to a 1-6 record by late October. But instead of fracturing like the Same Old Lions, this group rallied to win eight of their final ten games. Detroit finished 9-8 and claimed second place in the NFC North, securing their first winning record since 2017. While a tiebreaker painfully kept them out of the postseason, the season completely altered the trajectory of the franchise.

Ben Johnson’s promotion to offensive coordinator unlocked a unit that finished fifth in points - with 453 (26.6 ppg) - and fourth in total yards (6,460). Jared Goff silenced a legion of skeptics by playing highly efficient football, throwing for 4,438 yards, 29 touchdowns, and a microscopic seven interceptions. Amon-Ra St. Brown blossomed into a legitimate superstar wideout, hauling in 106 receptions for 1,161 yards. The real engine in the red zone, though, was Jamaal Williams, who handled the heavy lifting with 1,066 rushing yards and a league-high 17 rushing touchdowns. Along with dynamic back D’Andre Swift and a bruising offensive line anchored by Penei Sewell, the Lions weaponized a balanced, high-octane scheme that scored on 43.2 percent of its drives.

Conversely, Aaron Glenn’s defense spent the first two months of the season as an absolute sieve, ultimately ranking dead last in yards allowed (6,670) and 28th in points surrendered conceding 427 (25.1 ppg). Despite those ugly numbers, a youth movement sparked a major second-half turnaround. Rookie edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson proved he was entirely worth the second overall pick, leading the team with 9.5 sacks while adding three interceptions. Fellow rookies Kerby Joseph, who snatched a team-high four interceptions, and linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez infused the starting lineup with much-needed speed and violence. When James Houston burst off the practice squad to record eight sacks in just seven games, Detroit suddenly possessed a pass rush capable of masking their vulnerable secondary.

The turning point came on Halloween weekend. Following a demoralizing 31-27 loss to Miami that dropped them to 1-6, Campbell fired his defensive backs coach and challenged the roster’s manhood. The response was immediate: a gritty 15-9 win over Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers that ignited a three-game winning streak. The Lions went on to dismantle Jacksonville 40-14 and outclass the division-leading Vikings 34-23 at Ford Field. A Christmas Eve slip-up against Carolina threatened to derail the momentum, but the team answered by crushing the Chicago Bears 41-10 the following week to keep their miraculous postseason hopes alive until the final night of the calendar.

Detroit’s playoff dreams technically died hours before kickoff in Week 18 when Seattle clinched the final wild-card spot via tiebreaker. Yet, their season finale at Lambeau Field became an instant classic. Playing for nothing but pride and a chance to ruin Green Bay’s season, the Lions punched the Packers in the mouth, winning 20-16 to eliminate their bitter rivals on national television. The victory secured historic franchise milestones, as Jamaal Williams officially surpassed Barry Sanders’ single-season club record for rushing touchdowns. Hutchinson finished as the runner-up for Defensive Rookie of the Year, Goff earned a Pro Bowl nod, and the entire NFL realized that Detroit was no longer a punchline.
