Season Review
Detroit Lions 2013
The 2013 Detroit Lions season will forever be remembered as one of the most agonizing ‘what-if’ chapters in franchise history. Entering the year with massive expectations under head coach Jim Schwartz, the Lions loaded up by signing free agent running back Reggie Bush to a four-year deal, drafting defensive pillars Ezekiel Ansah and Darius Slay, and shoring up the secondary with safety Glover Quin. When Aaron Rodgers went down with a collarbone injury, the NFC North was gift-wrapped for Detroit. Instead, a catastrophic late-season meltdown saw the team finish with a 7-9 record, dropping from first place to a disappointing third-place finish in the division and costing Schwartz his job.
Statistically, the offense looked like a solid unit on paper, finishing sixth in the NFL in total yards with 6,442 and thirteenth in scoring with 395 points (24.7 ppg). Matthew Stafford piloted a pass-heavy attack, throwing for 4,650 yards and 29 touchdowns, though his efficiency was marred by 19 costly interceptions. Megatron was as dominant as ever; Calvin Johnson hauled in 84 catches for 1,492 yards and 12 touchdowns in just 14 games. Reggie Bush provided the ultimate safety valve, eclipsing the thousand-yard mark on the ground with 1,006 rushing yards while adding 506 receiving yards, operating beautifully alongside complementary back Joique Bell, who punched in eight rushing scores.
Defensively, the Lions were a middle-of-the-pack unit overall, ranking sixteenth in yards allowed and fifteenth in points allowed (23.5 ppg). The undisputed identity of this defense lived in the trenches, where Ndamukong Suh anchored a fierce front, racking up 5.5 sacks and 20 quarterback hits to earn first-team All-Pro honors alongside Nick Fairley’s six sacks. Rookie defensive end Ezekiel Ansah flashed immense potential with a team-leading eight sacks. Behind them, linebacker DeAndre Levy enjoyed a breakout campaign, intercepting a spectacular six passes, while defensive back Rashean Mathis and the newly acquired Glover Quin brought stability to a secondary that was integrating the developmental rookie Darius Slay.
Detroit’s timeline of crucial moments plays out like a Shakespearean tragedy. The high-water mark arrived on Thanksgiving Day, when the Lions completely dismantled the Rodgers-less Green Bay Packers 40-10, pushing their record to an impressive 7-5. It should have been the springboard to an easy division crown. Instead, it was the final victory of their year. The collapse began in the swirling blizzard of Philadelphia during a 34-20 loss, followed by a heartbreaking 18-16 defeat to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football. A stunning overtime loss to the New York Giants officially eliminated them from playoff contention before a final Whimper in Minnesota cemented a season-ending four-game losing streak.
Missing the postseason with a roster this talented solidified the 2013 Lions as a benchmark for modern NFL underachievement. Calvin Johnson and Ndamukong Suh kept their elite status with Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro nods. The historical legacy of this squad is defined by missed opportunities and critical mistakes, evidenced by 34 total turnovers. By coughing up the ball so consistently in December, a team built for a deep January run instead watched the playoffs from home, ushering in an immediate coaching overhaul.
