Season Review
Detroit Lions 2006
The 2006 Detroit Lions season entered the history books as the opening act of the disastrous Rod Marinelli era, finishing a brutal 3-13 and dead last in the NFC North. Coming off a 5-11 campaign, owner William Clay Ford Sr. and general manager Matt Millen cleaned house by bringing in Marinelli, along with offensive coordinator Mike Martz and high-profile free agents Jon Kitna and Dan Campbell to reshape the franchise identity. Instead of a quick turnaround, Detroit completely bottomed out, missing the playoffs for the seventh consecutive season and providing an ominous preview of the organization’s impending freefall.
Martz brought his trademark pass-heavy offense to Ford Field, helping Jon Kitna sling his way to a career-high 4,208 passing yards, though it came with a sloppy 21-to-22 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Wide receiver Roy Williams emerged as a premier deep threat, racking up 82 receptions for 1,310 yards and seven scores to earn a Pro Bowl nod. He was complemented by Mike Furrey, who surprisingly caught 98 passes for 1,086 yards, while running back Kevin Jones fought for 689 rushing yards and six touchdowns on the ground. Despite the gaudy aerial numbers that ranked the passing attack 7th in yards, the overall offense finished 21st in points scored (19.1 ppg) due to an abysmal rushing game that ranked dead last in both yards and attempts.
Defensively, Marinelli’s unit was an absolute sieve, finishing near the bottom of the league at 30th in points allowed (24.9 ppg) and 28th in total yards yielded. The single bright spot was rookie linebacker Ernie Sims, the ninth overall pick out of Florida State, who flew around the field to register a team-high 125 total tackles. Defensive tackle Cory Redding provided some interior muscle with a team-leading 8.0 sacks, and cornerback Dre Bly chipped in with three interceptions and four forced fumbles. However, the defense could not stop anyone on the ground, surrendered 2,010 rushing yards on the year, and consistently crumbled under pressure.
An excruciating 0-5 start immediately took the wind out of the team’s sails, highlighted by a wild 41-34 shootout loss to the St. Louis Rams in Week 4. A brief spark appeared when they captured wins against Buffalo and Atlanta, but a staggering seven-game losing streak from Week 10 through Week 16 sealed their fate. The low point arrived during a miserable December stretch where the Lions suffered double-digit losses to the Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins, showcasing a team completely outmatched in the trenches.
The lone saving grace of the entire campaign came in Week 17, when Detroit pulled off a shocking 39-31 road upset against Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys at Texas Stadium, spoiling Dallas’s bid for an outright NFC East title. There were no individual awards for this squad, as Roy Williams stood alone as the team’s only Pro Bowler. Historically, this 2006 team remains a fascinating, deeply flawed precursor to the infamous 0-16 squad of 2008, serving as a bleak monument to the Matt Millen era of front-office mismanagement.
