Season Review
Detroit Lions 2018
The 2018 Detroit Lions season was supposed to be the dawn of a highly disciplined era. After firing Jim Caldwell following consecutive 9-7 campaigns, general manager Bob Quinn hired Matt Patricia to inject the hallowed ‘Patriot Way’ into Motown. Armed with rookie first-round anchor Frank Ragnow and free-agent additions LeGarrette Blount, Devon Kennard, and Christian Jones, expectations pointed toward a postseason return. Instead, the team cratered to a dismal 6-10 record, finishing last in the NFC North. The season opened with a humiliating 48-17 prime-time shellacking by the Jets, setting a dark, dysfunctional tone for a frustrating year that ended without a playoff berth.
Offensively, the Lions were a chore to watch, ranking 25th in scoring with 324 points (20.3 ppg) and 24th in total yards. Matthew Stafford endured a tough, regressive year under coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, throwing for 3,777 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions while absorbing 40 sacks. The unit lost its rhythm after veteran playmaker Golden Tate was traded midseason, but sophomore receiver Kenny Golladay broke out with 1,063 yards and five scores. Rookie running back Kerryon Johnson flashed star potential, rushing for 641 yards and averaging 5.4 yards per carry before injuries intervened. Blount added five rushing scores, but the ground game lacked the consistency to sustain drives.
Patricia was imported to build a dominant defense, which finished a respectable 10th in yards allowed but 16th in points surrendered (22.5 ppg). The midseason trade for defensive tackle Damon ‘Snacks’ Harrison instantly transformed a porous run defense, allowing edge rusher Romeo Okwara to thrive with a team-high 7.5 sacks. Kennard added 7.0 sacks, while linebacker Jarrad Davis notched 100 combined tackles and six sacks. In the secondary, cornerback Darius Slay earned Pro Bowl honors with three interceptions and 17 pass deflections, while safety Quandre Diggs matched him with three picks. However, the defense ranked 31st in takeaways, forcing just 14 turnovers all year.
Detroit’s schedule was a bizarre mix of signature victories and listless collapses. The absolute peak arrived in Week 3 with a masterful 26-10 Sunday Night Football dismantling of the New England Patriots, which briefly legitimized Patricia’s hiring. The Lions later climbed to 3-3 after beating Miami 32-21, but a subsequent three-game slide against Seattle, Minnesota and Chicago doomed their campaign. Despite a gritty 20-19 win over Carolina, a punch-less December stretch mathematically eliminated them from contention. A final 31-0 shutout of the Packers in Green Bay provided a hollow ending to a thoroughly derailed autumn.
Missing the postseason cemented the 2018 Lions as a cautionary tale regarding the forced implementation of an outside team’s culture. The legacy of this squad rests on the stark disconnect between Patricia’s rigid defensive philosophy and an evolving, explosive NFL landscape. While individual standouts like Slay represented the team well, the collective regression signaled the definitive end of Detroit’s brief run as a perennial wild-card contender. It stands historically as a monument to flawed franchise philosophy, initiating a painful downward spiral that eventually forced a total organizational rebuild.
