Season Review
Detroit Lions 2002
The 2002 Detroit Lions season was a masterclass in Matt Millen-era dysfunction. Entering the year under head coach Marty Mornhinweg, the Lions moved into a shiny new Ford Field hoping to bury the ghost of the previous year's 2-14 nightmare. Instead, they stumbled to an ugly 3-13 record, finishing last in the newly minted NFC North. Millen tried to fix the roster by drafting quarterback Joey Harrington third overall along with cornerback Andre Goodman, while adding free agent wideouts Az-Zahir Hakim and Bill Schroeder. The experiment failed spectacularly, resulting in a lost season that cost Mornhinweg his job.
Statistically, the offense was an absolute eyesore, ranking 26th in points (19.1 ppg) and 28th in total yards. Harrington was thrown straight into the woodchipper, starting 12 games and throwing for 2,294 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. Schroeder grabbed five touchdowns, but the passing game never truly took flight. The only guy who showed up consistently was running back James Stewart, who gritted his way to 1,021 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Detroit tried to run a balanced system, but they constantly found themselves behind the sticks and having to throw, averaging a pathetic 4.7 yards per play and giving away 31 turnovers.
If you thought the offense was bad, the defense was a full-blown horror show, ranking 31st in both points (28.2 ppg) and yards allowed. Opponents treated the Lions like a scrimmage, hanging 451 points and 6,117 total yards on them. Linebacker Chris Claiborne tried to play hero, racking up a team-high 102 tackles and three interceptions. Up front, rookie Kalimba Edwards showed flashes with 6.5 sacks, while veteran Robert Porcher added 5.5. Still, the secondary got picked apart weekly, and the unit surrendered a massive 5.5 yards per play to anyone who lined up against them.
The season was defined by brutal stretches and pure coaching comedy. After an 0-3 start, the Lions beat New Orleans and grabbed a 23-20 overtime win against Chicago in Week 7. When they choked out Dallas 9-7 in Week 9 to reach 3-5, you almost thought they might be competitive. Then the wheels detached completely. Detroit finished the year on a soul-crushing eight-game losing streak, headlined by a overtime rematch loss to the Bears and a 38-36 defensive tire fire against Minnesota to close out the schedule.
Missing the postseason was inevitable, but the legacy of this team lives on in NFL blooper reels. The signature moment of the entire season was Mornhinweg famously choosing to kick off in overtime against Chicago - a decision so baffling it still defies logic. Unsurprisingly, no Lions took home awards, and the franchise was left staring at another total rebuild. This squad cemented Detroit's status as the league's premier punchline of the early 2000s, proving that a gorgeous new stadium means absolutely nothing if your roster, culture and coaching is completely broken.
