Season Review
Atlanta Falcons 2024
The 2024 Atlanta Falcons season was the perfect example of offseason hype and on-field reality. After dumping Arthur Smith, owner Arthur Blank swung for the fences by hiring Raheem Morris as head coach and signing veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins to a massive free-agent contract. Suddenly, Atlanta was the trendy pick to run away with a weak NFC South. Instead, the Falcons delivered a maddeningly uneven 8-9 campaign, finishing second in the division and extending their postseason drought to seven consecutive seasons. Even a shocking draft-day decision to select quarterback Michael Penix Jr. eighth overall could not distract from a year defined by brutal turnovers and a late-season collapse that left the franchise right back in the NFL middle tier.
Zac Robinson’s West Coast system did elevate the team’s total offense to sixth in the league in total yards, but the unit’s overall efficiency was dragged down by a brutal 24 turnovers. Kirk Cousins threw for 3,508 yards and 18 touchdowns across 14 starts, but his 16 interceptions led to his late-season benching for Penix. When the offense clicked, it was because of sophomore running back Bijan Robinson, who earned Pro Bowl honors by racking up 1,456 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns while adding 431 receiving yards. Wideout Drake London also broke out with 100 receptions for 1,271 yards and nine touchdowns, while free-agent addition Darnell Mooney nearly cracked the 1,000-yard milestone with 992 yards of his own.
While the offense had its explosive moments, Jimmy Lake’s defense was a sieve, ranking 23rd in both yards and points allowed (24.9 ppg). The team traded for pass rusher Matt Judon, added 5.5 sacks, while linebacker Kaden Elliss anchored the middle with a team-high 151 tackles and five sacks. The real strength of this group resided in the secondary, where star safety Jessie Bates III flew around for 102 tackles and four interceptions, including a 55-yard pick-six. Cornerback AJ Terrell and high-profile free-agent addition Justin Simmons each contributed two interceptions, but the pass defense repeatedly withered when facing accurate passing attacks, ranking 31st in passing touchdowns allowed.
Atlanta’s schedule was a roller coaster of thrilling peaks and inexplicable valleys. The high point came early, highlighted by a dramatic Week 2 road victory against the eventual NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles and a wild 36-30 overtime shootout against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 5 where Cousins threw for 509 yards. Sitting pretty at 6-3 after defeating the Dallas Cowboys in Week 9, the Falcons completely lost edge. They dropped two straight heading into their bye, including a blowout loss to Denver, and managed just two victories over their final eight games. Even a late-season quarterback switch to Penix could not arrest the slide.
The legacy of the 2024 Falcons will be defined by their spectacular failure to capitalize on a wide-open divisional race. They missed the playoffs when regulation time expired in Week 18, watching Tampa Bay clinch the South just before dropping an anticlimactic 44-38 overtime finale to the lowly Carolina Panthers. Statistically, Robinson established himself as one of the league’s premier multi-purpose weapons, and right guard Chris Lindstrom maintained his elite status with a second-team All-Pro nod. Yet, for a roster oozing with premium top-ten draft talent, finishing under .500 felt less like a building block and more like a massive missed opportunity.
