Season Review
Atlanta Falcons 2017
The 2017 Atlanta Falcons entered the season under the heaviest psychological cloud in NFL history, tasked with rebuilding their psyches after blowing a 28-3 lead in the previous Super Bowl. Head coach Dan Quinn returned with a roster that remained elite on paper, fortified by free agent additions like defensive tackle Dontari Poe and defensive end Jack Crawford to anchor the trenches. Despite the crushing hangover from Houston, Atlanta fought through a fiercely competitive NFC South to post a 10-6 record, good for third place in the division. While they did not replicate the regular season dominance of their previous campaign, they successfully navigated the emotional minefield to secure a return ticket to the postseason.
Offensively, the Falcons underwent a structural identity shift following the departure of coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Operating under new leadership, quarterback Matt Ryan still put together an efficient campaign, throwing for 4,095 yards and 20 touchdowns, though his efficiency dropped slightly from his MVP form as he tossed 12 interceptions. The aerial assault was anchored by the incomparable Julio Jones, who tore through secondary schemes for 1,444 receiving yards on 88 receptions. Supported by a balanced ground attack featuring Devonta Freeman’s 865 rushing yards and Tevin Coleman’s 628 yards, the offense finished eighth in total yards (22.1 ppg) and fifteenth in scoring, remaining a highly dangerous unit even if it lacked the historic punch of 2016.
While the offense adapted, the Falcons defense took a noticeable step forward under Quinn’s guidance, morphing into the roster’s stabilizing backbone. Atlanta finished the year ranked ninth in total yards allowed and an impressive eighth in points allowed, giving up just 315 points (19.7 ppg) all season. Second-year linebacker Deion Jones was spectacular, racking up a team-high 138 combined tackles and three interceptions to earn a Pro Bowl nod. The secondary was tightly locked down by cornerbacks Robert Alford, who defensed 20 passes, and Desmond Trufant. Up front, Adrian Clayborn provided a fierce pass rush with 9.5 sacks, while young safety Keanu Neal forced three fumbles and logged 116 tackles to fortify the defense’s physical edge.
The regular season was marked by crucial streaks and hard-fought turning points. Atlanta jumped out to a promising 3-0 start before crashing into a three-game losing streak in October, capped by a flat 23-7 loss in a Super Bowl rematch against the New England Patriots. The definitive turning point arrived in November when Adrian Clayborn recorded a six-sack game against the Dallas Cowboys, sparking a crucial 27-7 victory. The Falcons proved their mettle down the stretch by winning six of their final eight games, including a critical 20-17 victory over the rival New Orleans Saints and a gritty 22-10 win over the Carolina Panthers in Week 17 to lock up their playoff spot.
In the postseason, the battle-tested Falcons proved they were still a championship-caliber team by traveling to Los Angeles and suffocating the high-flying Rams 26-13 in the Wild Card round. Their journey ultimately ended the following week in a tight 15-10 Divisional round loss to the eventual champion Philadelphia Eagles, stopping just yards short of a go-ahead touchdown on a final fourth-down play. The legacy of this 2017 squad is defined by resilience; while they did not win a ring, they became one of the few teams to lose a Super Bowl in heartbreaking fashion and return to win a playoff game the next year. Backed by Pro Bowl campaigns from Deion Jones and Keanu Neal, this group proved that Atlanta football was built to endure.
