Season Review
Atlanta Falcons 2014
The 2014 Atlanta Falcons entered the year desperate to wipe away the stench of a dismal previous campaign, yet they finished a mediocre 6-10, placing third in an historically awful NFC South where no team managed a .500 record. Hoping to shore up their trenches, the front office signed free agents Paul Soliai and Tyson Jackson while using their first-round pick on offensive tackle Jake Matthews. Despite these investments, the season ultimately cost head coach Mike Smith his job after a devastating Week 17 defeat left them watching the postseason from home.
The offense remained highly explosive, finishing eighth in total yards and twelfth in points scored (23.8 ppg) under quarterback Matt Ryan. Ryan shouldered the burden of a pass-heavy attack, throwing his way to 4,694 yards and 28 touchdowns against 14 interceptions. His primary target, Julio Jones, put together a spectacular Pro Bowl campaign with 104 receptions for 1,593 yards. Veteran Roddy White chipped in 921 yards, while a multi-back committee led by aging veteran Steven Jackson and rookie Devonta Freeman provided just enough balance to keep defenses honest.
If the offense gave fans hope, the defense utterly destroyed it, finishing dead last in the league in total yards allowed and twenty-seventh in points surrendered (26.1 ppg). The pass rush was practically non-existent, netting a pitiful 22 total sacks all season, with Kroy Biermann leading the underwhelming unit with a mere 4.5 sacks. Linebacker Paul Worrilow racked up 142 tackles by virtue of opposition ball-carriers constantly reaching the second level, while bright spots like cornerback Desmond Trufant and safety Kemal Ishmael were left to do far too much heavy lifting in a broken scheme.
The year was defined by bizarre, wild swings, starting with a thrilling 37-34 overtime victory against the rival New Orleans Saints in Week 1, followed by a historic 56-14 demolition of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 3 where Devin Hester broke the all-time return touchdown record. However, a crushing five-game losing streak followed into October exposed their defensive frailties. They remarkably stayed alive in the division race late into December, but a spectacular 34-3 collapse against the Carolina Panthers in the finale sealed their fate.
Missing the postseason with a 6-10 record normally is not a surprise, but playing in a division won by a sub-.500 team made it a bitter pill to swallow. The legacy of this team is defined as the final chapter of the Mike Smith era, exposing the urgent need for a complete philosophical and schematic overhaul. While individual achievements like Hester's record and Jones's dominance stood out, the 2014 squad serves as a cautionary tale of how a high-powered offense can be completely neutralized by a league-bottom defense.
