Season Review
Atlanta Falcons 2011
The 2011 Atlanta Falcons season was defined by a massive, franchise-altering gamble that shifted the team away from its conservative identity. Fresh off a 13-3 season in 2010, general manager Thomas Dimitroff stunned the league by trading a king’s ransom of five draft picks to move up to the No. 6 spot for Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones. The objective was clear: transform a steady regular season machine into an explosive powerhouse capable of winning a Lombardi Trophy. Under head coach Mike Smith, Atlanta navigated a top-heavy NFC South to finish with a 10-6 record, good for second in the division and the No. 5 seed in the playoffs. While they achieved consecutive double-digit win seasons for the first time in franchise history, the ultimate goal remained frustratingly out of reach.
On offense, coordinator Mike Mularkey oversaw a unit that ranked seventh in the league in points with 402 (25.1 ppg) and tenth in total yards. Quarterback Matt Ryan continued his ascent, throwing for 4,177 yards and 29 touchdowns against just 12 interceptions while operating with high-level efficiency. The passing game benefited immensely from the new dynamic duo out wide; veteran Roddy White earned Pro Bowl honors by hauling in 100 receptions for 1,296 yards and eight touchdowns, while the rookie Jones added an electric 959 yards and matched White with eight scores in just 13 games. When Ryan was not attacking the secondary, he could dump it off to timeless tight end Tony Gonzalez, who recorded 80 catches for 875 yards, or rely on bruising running back Michael Turner, who shouldered the load with 301 carries for 1,340 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Defensively, coordinator Brian VanGorder led a unit that finished a mediocre 18th in points allowed (21.9 ppg) but anchored itself on a stellar run defense, ranking sixth in rushing yards surrendered. Middle linebacker Curtis Lofton was the absolute heartbeat of the defense, racking up a massive 147 combined tackles and adding two interceptions. The pass rush remained heavily reliant on 33-year-old defensive end John Abraham, who defied father time to register 9.5 sacks and force four fumbles, while linebacker Sean Weatherspoon chipped in four sacks and a team-high 14 tackles for loss. Free-agent signing Ray Edwards provided 3.5 sacks on the opposite edge, and free safety Thomas DeCoud patroled the secondary with a team-leading four interceptions.
Atlanta’s season was a bumpy ride of statement wins and sobering reality checks against elite competition. They bounced back from a dismal Week 1 blowout against Chicago to edge out the Philadelphia Eagles 35-31 in an early-season thriller. However, home losses to the Green Bay Packers and an agonizing overtime defeat to the rival New Orleans Saints highlighted their inability to close the gap on the conference elite. A midseason surge stabilized the campaign, highlighted by a dominant two-game stretch in December where the Falcons outscored the Panthers and Jaguars by a combined score of 72-37 to secure their playoff positioning.
The postseason, unfortunately, delivered one of the most agonizing chapters in franchise lore. Travelling to face the New York Giants in the Wild Card round, the high-flying Atlanta offense completely stalled in a miserable 24-2 defeat, with the team’s only points coming courtesy of a first-quarter safety. The legacy of the 2011 Falcons will always be intertwined with the Julio Jones trade. While it cost the front office the depth needed to truly support Matt Ryan on defense, it yielded one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history and proved that Arthur Blank’s franchise was finally willing to push all its chips to the center of the table.
