Season Review
Atlanta Falcons 1998
The 1998 Atlanta Falcons staged one of the most stunning, lightning-in-a-bottle campaigns in team history. Coming off a mediocre 7-9 finish, absolutely nobody predicted Dan Reeves' squad would skyrocket to a 14-2 record and claim the NFC West crown. The magical transformation was fueled by stellar offseason retooling, bringing in impactful veterans like linebacker Cornelius Bennett, safety Eugene Robinson, and wideout Tony Martin. This group completely defied the skeptics who viewed them as divisional afterthoughts. By the time the regular season concluded, the 'Dirty Bird' phenomenon had captured the national imagination, driving the Falcons to their first-ever Super Bowl appearance.
Offensively, Atlanta built a physical identity around a punishing ground game and an efficient aerial attack that ranked fourth in the league with 442 points scored (27.6 ppg). Running back Jamal Anderson was the engine, logging a monstrous 410 carries for 1,846 yards and 14 touchdowns while pioneering the famous 'Dirty Bird' celebration. Anderson's heavy workload opened up the play-action game for quarterback Chris Chandler, who earned a Pro Bowl nod with 3,154 passing yards and 25 touchdowns against 12 interceptions. When Chandler went deep, he relied on the prolific tandem of Tony Martin and Terance Mathis, who posted 1,181 and 1,136 receiving yards respectively.
While the offense danced, the defense provided the brutal backbone of the team, ranking fourth in points allowed (18.1 ppg) and eighth in yards surrendered. Atlanta excelled at suffocating opposing ground games, yielding a microscopic 3.3 yards per carry to rank second in the NFL. Middle linebacker Jessie Tuggle anchored the interior with 86 tackles, while defensive end Lester Archambeau generated a ferocious pass rush with a team-high 10.0 sacks. The unit's defining trait was its ball-hawking secondary, leading the NFL with 44 total takeaways, including seven interceptions from Ray Buchanan and four from Eugene Robinson.
The narrative of this championship season was forged through key responses to adversity and a spectacular 11-game winning streak to close the year. After suffering a Week 4 defeat against the rival San Francisco 49ers, the Falcons exacted revenge in Week 11 with a definitive 31-19 home victory that marked a true changing of the guard. Following their final regular-season blemish against the New York Jets in Week 8, Atlanta became unstoppable, securing statement wins like a 41-10 dismantling of the New England Patriots and a 38-16 blowout of the Miami Dolphins.
In the postseason, the Falcons solidified their status by outlasting the 49ers 20-18 before shocking the world in an iconic 30-27 overtime upset against the 15-1 Minnesota Vikings, sealed by Morten Andersen's historic 38-yard field goal. Though the dream concluded with a 34-19 loss to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXIII, the legacy of this squad remains unforgettable. Jamal Anderson finished third in AP MVP voting while Reeves earned Coach of the Year honors, capping a magical run that proved anything was possible.
