Season Review
Atlanta Falcons 1999
Talk about a Super Bowl hangover of epic proportions. Fresh off a magical, unexpected run to Super Bowl XXXIII, the 1999 Atlanta Falcons came crashing down to earth in spectacular fashion, finishing a dismal 5-11 and sliding to third in the NFC West. Head coach Dan Reeves could only watch as the momentum from their previous 14-2 campaign vanished almost immediately, punctuated by an agonizing 0-4 start out of the gate. Offseason reinforcements like free-agent safety Marty Carter and first-round draft choice Patrick Kerney injected some fresh blood into the roster, but it was nowhere near enough to cure what ailed this squad. Instead of solidifying themselves as a new NFC powerhouse, the Falcons spent the final year of the millennium providing a masterclass in how quickly the NFL window can slam shut.
The single biggest culprit behind this collapse was an offense that lost its identity in Week 2, when star running back Jamal Anderson suffered a season-ending knee injury after just 19 carries. Without their engine, the running game withered into a pathetic 30th-ranked unit that managed a meager 3.2 yards per attempt. Quarterback Chris Chandler battled his way through 12 starts, tossing 16 touchdowns against 11 interceptions, but he spent most of his autumn running for his life as the offense surrendered 49 total sacks. Wide receiver Terance Mathis did his best to salvage the passing game, crossing the millennium mark with 1,016 receiving yards. Speedster Tim Dwight also flashed lethal big-play ability with seven touchdown receptions, averaging a ridiculous 20.9 yards per catch. Still, the Falcons sputtered to 23rd in points scored (17.8 ppg), a far cry from the explosive unit that had danced the Dirty Bird all over the league just 12 months prior.
Defensively, the story was equally frustrating, as the unit plummeted to 25th in points allowed (23.8 ppg) after being a premier top-five group the year before. The defensive front did offer a few bright spots, primarily fueled by veteran edge rusher Chuck Smith, who put together a stellar individual campaign with 10.0 sacks and four forced fumbles. Defensive tackle Shane Dronett also caused problems in the interior with 6.5 sacks of his own. Behind them, the linebacking corps was anchored by the ever-reliable Jessie Tuggle and an emerging young Keith Brooking, who led the team with 93 total tackles. However, the back end of the defense completely lost its ball-hawking magic. After leading the league in takeaways in 1998, the secondary managed just 12 interceptions all season, with cornerback Ray Buchanan leading a largely deflated unit with four picks.
If you want to pinpoint the exact moment the season went up in flames, look no further than an emotional Monday Night Football blowout loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2, the exact night Jamal Anderson went down. The team spiraled from there, suffering demoralizing blowout losses to Kurt Warner and the ascending St. Louis Rams by scores of 35-7 and 41-13. There were brief glimmers of competitive pride, like a sweeping pair of victories over the rival New Orleans Saints and a tight 27-20 win against the Carolina Panthers. But every time Atlanta threatened to build a streak, they collapsed under a mountain of turnovers and defensive lapses, culminating in a dismal late-season stretch where they dropped three straight games to Jacksonville, Tampa Bay and Carolina.
Because of their rapid descent, the Falcons missed the postseason, leaving fans to wonder if the 1998 run was merely a fluke. Historically, this 1999 squad serves as a cautionary tale of how dependent modern NFL offenses are on a singular, workhorse running back. The silver lining came at the absolute tail end of the schedule, where the team dug deep to win its final two games against the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers to finish 5-11. While legendary kicker Morten Andersen remained a model of special-teams consistency by knocking through all 34 of his extra points, there were no Pro Bowl nods or individual accolades to provide a silver lining. It remains a stark reminder of the brutal volatility of life in the National Football League.
