Season Review
Atlanta Falcons 2015
The 2015 Atlanta Falcons entered a brand new era under defensive-minded head coach Dan Quinn, arriving with high expectations to fix a broken franchise. The front office aggressively target-hunted in free agency, signing defensive additions Brooks Reed, Justin Durant, and Adrian Clayborn to reshape the locker room culture. Quinn also laid down long-term organizational roots through the draft, onboarding foundational pieces like Vic Beasley, Tevin Coleman, and Grady Jarrett. Despite a blazing start to the year, the structural cracks in the roster widened down the stretch, culminating in a mediocre 8-8 record and a disappointing second-place finish in the NFC South that left Atlanta on the outside looking in come playoff time.
Offensively, Kyle Shanahan took the reins as coordinator and engineered a mixed-bag unit that ranked sixth in passing yards but slid down to twenty-first in total points scored (21.2 ppg). Quarterback Matt Ryan carried the heavy passing volume, attempting 614 throws and logging 4,591 passing yards alongside 21 touchdowns against 16 interceptions. Ryan leaned almost entirely on superstar wideout Julio Jones, who had a legendary season with a league-high 136 receptions for 1,871 yards and eight touchdowns. Second-year running back Devonta Freeman emerged as a premier dual-threat weapon, exploding for 1,056 rushing yards and 11 scores while adding 73 receptions out of the backfield to give the attack its identity.
Quinns defensive overhaul produced modest tangible improvements, lifting the unit to fourteenth in points allowed (21.6 ppg) and sixteenth in total yards surrendered. Linebacker Paul Worrilow directed traffic from the second level with a team-high 95 combined tackles, while defensive lineman Adrian Clayborn injected much-needed energy upfront by making three sacks to go along with 15 QB hits. The absolute crown jewel of the defensive backfield was cornerback Desmond Trufant, who secured a Pro Bowl nod by blanketing opposing wide receivers and recording 11 passes defended. Safety Ricardo Allen also flashed high upside, recording three interceptions to provide a steady presence over the top for a group playing with vastly increased intensity.
The Falcons started with a brilliant 5-0 win streak that had the league buzzing about a Super Bowl run. The early peak came in Week 4 with a resounding 48-21 thrashing of the Houston Texans, showing just how explosive the team could be when hitting on all cylinders. However, a crushing collapse immediately followed, as the Falcons dropped six consecutive games through November and early December due to a persistent turnover problem. They temporarily stopped the bleeding in Week 15 with a 23/17 win over Jacksonville and followed that up with a dramatic 20-13 victory over the previously undefeated Carolina Panthers, but a regular season finale loss to the rival New Orleans Saints sealed their fate.
Missing the postseason after starting the year 5-0 was a tough pill to swallow, making the 2015 campaign a a lesson about consistency in the modern NFL. Historically, this squad is remembered as the critical step where the offensive foundation was poured for the legendary run that would follow just one year later. Julio Jones and Devonta Freeman both earned Pro Bowl honors, with Jones securing First-Team All-Pro recognition after putting together one of the most statistically dominant receiving seasons in football history. Ultimately, this year proved that while Dan Quinns blueprint was taking hold, the roster still required a few more crucial adjustments to be considered a true championship contender.
