Season Review

Dallas Cowboys 2024

The 2024 Dallas Cowboys season was a slow-motion disaster that exposed the franchise's crumbling foundation. Coming off three consecutive 12-win campaigns, expectations in Big D remained high, yet a passive offseason left the roster dangerously thin. Jerry Jones's only notable veteran additions were Eric Kendricks and Royce Freeman, leaving Mike McCarthy with reduced depth when injuries struck. The house of cards collapsed into a dismal 7-10 record, finishing third in the NFC East as they were locked out of the postseason, signaling the definitive end of an era.

Dallas deployed a highly unbalanced, pass-heavy attack that ranked third in the league in pass attempts but plummeted to 21st in scoring (20.6 ppg). Dak Prescott started eight games before a season-ending injury, throwing for 1,978 yards, 11 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Cooper Rush started eight games in relief, adding 1,844 yards and 12 scores while going .500 in those games. Wideout CeeDee Lamb remained a superstar, catching 101 passes for 1,194 yards and six touchdowns, while Rico Dowdle ground out 1,079 rushing yards. However, a stagnant run game averaged just 4.0 yards per carry, making the offense painfully predictable.

Defensively, the Cowboys were a complete catastrophe under Mike Zimmer, ranking 31st in points allowed (27.5 ppg) and 28th in yards. Opponents bullied Dallas on the ground, racking up 25 rushing touchdowns and averaging 4.8 yards per carry. Edge rusher Micah Parsons remained elite, securing 12.0 sacks in 13 games, while Eric Kendricks anchored the unit with 138 tackles. DeMarvion Overshown flashed star potential with 90 tackles and 5.0 sacks, but with DaRon Bland sidelined for most of the year, Trevon Diggs could not salvage a thoroughly broken secondary.

The season's downward spiral began early with a shocking 44-19 home drubbing by the Saints and a 47-9 humiliation against the Lions. The definitive turning point arrived in Week 9 against Atlanta when Prescott suffered a season-ending hamstring tear, amidst a brutal five-game skid. Cooper Rush briefly stopped the bleeding with consecutive late-November wins over the Commanders and Giants, but a late-season collapse, highlighted by an embarrassing 41-7 blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, permanently extinguished the team's faint playoff aspirations.

Missing the playoffs cemented this season as a era-ending failure for the modern Cowboys. Individual bright spots were rare, though kicker Brandon Aubrey had a stellar year, finishing 40-of-47 on field goals including a monster 65-yarder, and KaVontae Turpin earned Pro Bowl nods as a returner. Tyler Smith also secured Pro Bowl honors on the offensive line. Ultimately, the 2024 squad will be remembered as a top-heavy group whose lack of depth and defensive compliance thoroughly wasted another year of a closing championship window.
