Season Review
Dallas Cowboys 2009
The 2009 Dallas Cowboys season arrived with immense internal pressure and the glitz of opening a shiny new billion-dollar stadium, but the real storyline revolved around navigating life after releasing Terrell Owens. Head coach Wade Phillips was operating under a heavy mandate to rectify the previous December collapse, leading Jerry Jones to bring in key veteran additions like linebacker Keith Brooking, defensive end Igor Olshansky, and safety Gerald Sensabaugh. The offseason adjustments paid off handsomely, as Dallas bounced back to finish 11-5, clinching the highly competitive NFC East division crown. Despite a season of dramatic peaks and valleys, the franchise managed to capture its first postseason victory since 1996 before falling deep in the playoffs.
Offensively, the unit finished second in total yards but struggled slightly with red-zone efficiency, ranking fourteenth in total points with 361 (22.6 ppg). Quarterback Tony Romo turned in one of the most disciplined and prolific regular seasons of his career with 4,483 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, and a remarkably low nine interceptions across sixteen starts. The aerial assault evolved beautifully through the breakout of Pro Bowl wide receiver Miles Austin, who racked up 1,320 yards and 11 touchdowns, alongside the ever-reliable Jason Witten, who caught 94 balls for 1,030 yards. Dallas paired this air game with a balanced, highly physical ground attack spearheaded by Marion Barber III’s 932 yards and seven touchdowns, giving the offense a relentless chew-the-clock element.
While the offense grabbed headlines, the defense was the real engine of the squad under Phillips’s direct guidance. Dallas fielded a brutal, elite unit that surrendered only 250 points all year, ranking second in the league in scoring defense (15.6 ppg) while finishing ninth in total yards allowed. The pass rush was absolutely ferocious, led by First-Team All-Pro outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware, who racked up 11 sacks, alongside Anthony Spencer’s six sacks and 23 quarterback hits. Up front, Pro Bowl nose tackle Jay Ratliff lead the interior line with six sacks of his own, while secondary anchors Mike Jenkins, with five interceptions, and veteran Terence Newman blanketed opposing wide receivers to neutralize deep threats.
Every Dallas season needs high drama, and 2009 delivered via a signature December pivot point. After dropping back-to-back games to the New York Giants and San Diego Chargers to fall to 8-5, the familiar whispers of another late-season collapse began to echo loudly around Irving. Instead, the Cowboys traveled to New Orleans and shocked the undefeated 13-0 Saints 24-17 on a Saturday night, altering the trajectory of their year. Armed with newfound momentum, Dallas concluded the regular season with consecutive, dominant shutout victories over the Washington Redskins and rival Philadelphia Eagles to lock up the division.
The real relief came in the NFC Wild Card round, where Dallas thrashed the Eagles for a third time that year, 34-14, to finally break their thirteen-year playoff drought. While the season came to a crashing halt the following week in a 34-3 blowout loss to Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings, the 2009 squad left an important footprint. It proved Tony Romo could win in January, earned Pro Bowl nods for stars like Austin, Witten, Jenkins, Newman, Ware, and Ratliff, and established a defensive template that briefly returned the star back to the top of the NFC East.
